Great little sushi place with a wonderfully friendly staff to get lunch or dinner at if you're visiting Downtown NPR! Every time I visit here the experience is always delightful, when you walk in you’re greeted by staff members with sincere warmth. The servers, chefs, and all of the staff are very knowledgeable, professional, and have such a positive energy that it’s infectious. If you’re new to Asian cuisine, no question is the wrong question and they are happy to help with anything you need, because I’ve brought friends here, and even when I came my first time in June 2023, it was a bit overwhelming because of how huge the menu is! It’s definitely worth it though, and the staff is super attentive without being too intrusive, it’s the perfect balance! It’s rare that the food, service, and decor all combine to such an excellence the way Kazu’s does. Everything we ate was flavorful and delicious. It was very very delightful! It’s always very good. I personally love sitting and eating at the sushi bar because it gives you that more authentic experience watching the chefs make the meals for you, and then they hand them to you right there. The rolls are great, they have specials everyday if we want to go a more affordable route on rolls, but if you’re looking for a more specific type of roll, I highly recommend the ‘Rainbow Roll’ and the ‘Kazu’s House Roll’. The ‘Tempura Japanese Bagel Roll’ is very delicious as well, if you’re not looking for rolls, the ‘Whitefish Teriyaki’ is to die for, actually it’s to LIVE for, comes with white rice, miso soup, and it also had fried vegetables, I think it was stir fry, either way it was scrumptious! Might I emphasize how good the miso soup is, as well as the edamame, oh and the sake! The Sour Apple Sake is a must every time for me, I need to try the plum they have, they also have strawberry but you have to order it by the bottle. They have so much variety when it comes to beverages, whether they are alcoholic or not! This place has it all, definitely a lunch/dinner highlight, highly highly recommend. Keep up the good...
Read moreI wasn't sure if I wanted to review this place because I generally have a lot of respect for Japanese chefs. But I feel like I was persuaded by the positive reviews from here very UNFORTUNATELY. So I wasted my money and my time - and it was really uncomfortable. I wish someone had told me. So here you go. I was very excited after reading the reviews on here about this place, and we drove DIRECTLY to the restaurant because I couldn't wait to try the food that was recommended!! I was disappointed from the beginning to the end, unfortunately. I'm just going to say this because it's true, I'm not trying to be mean and I thought about leaving this out, but it mattered to me because I was trying to EAT FOOD - it smells like rotten sewer strongly in the bathrooms and the smell also comes into the dining room. They had incense burning towards the back but it didn't help the front. So, I ordered the dish that was raved about in the reviews and I was really excited! Unfortunately, I couldn't take a second bite. I tried to. I tried to have my friend see if they liked it because I was embarrassed to send it back. They were disgusted too. Not only was the taste like a spoiled dead animal, but it looked awful. I was very apologetic for sending it back, but eating it was not an option. The waitress came back and said the owner said he would let it go this one time, but not twice. (I was already so embarrassed and very apologetic!) So I just ordered whatever was safest after that (I asked what was safe to order) and was given a (very)small portion that was decent enough to eat, but not what I would call good. My friend felt sorry and switched plates with me halfway through. Their dinner was fine. On the way out the owner locked eyes with me as I walked all the way to the door. I was wanting to slightly bow to show my respect and no hard feelings, so I did... but there was none of that reciprocated. I tipped my server really well and was as polite as I could be. I will never go back - in the end I spent about $58 for dinner for 2 that wasn't worth $20, to be...
Read moreI came in on a Wednesday night about 7:45 PM. Sat down at the sushi bar. Someone greeted me, brought over the menu, a plate, soy sauce bowl and a napkin. She said my server would be over soon.
The restaurant had a large group across multiple tables, another group arrived and pushed two tables together and there were 4 of us at the sushi bar.
My server, the wife, arrived and asked what did I want to drink. I placed my drink order and off she went. A few moments later she returned with my drink and took my dinner order.
I eat sashimi weekly at multiple, long standing sushi restaurants in the Tampa Bay area, so I started off with the sashimi appetizer.
Kazu’s fish was noticeable more tender and the delicate sweetness of the fish more present. I asked about the “Spicy Tuna Nachos”. This dish was quite tasty and fun to eat. It is similar to tuna tartare with chips at other sushi bars. I finished off with the “Firecracker”. This is made with pressed rice, not rolled rice. Kazu’s rice seems to be more tender.
I noticed that the “rice-to-fish” portion is smaller than any other Tampa Bay sushi bar, creating a better eating experience. Rice is used to compliment the fish and it’s flavor in Japan.
From their website… “Kazunobu Miyazato has more than 47 years experience as a sushi chef. A descendant of the Samurai Warriors of Japan, Kazu was born on the island of Okinawa and trained in Tokyo”. Kazunobu’s Samurai heritage and training are present in the details that set this sushi bar apart from the rest. I throughly enjoyed being served by such a dedicated sushi chef. I will be back, looking forward to my next meal at Kazu’s Sushi.
The only reason I gave Kazu’s 4 out of 5 stars is because I placed “To Go” order of Tempura Onion Rings when I got my dinner. I ate my dinner and waited an additional 20 mins after to get my server’s attention about my “to Go” order, she immediately went to back back, brought out my order...
