This place is amazing and I haven't found anything like it in Manhattan. Certainly not in midtown. The food is delicious and interesting.
I can't speak to its authenticity since I have no other experience with African food, but the flavors are unique. It's a buffet by the pound type place but it never tastes that way. Probably because of high turn over but more so because most of the dishes lend themselves to long cooking times.
They have a lot of stewed meats and whole fishes. They also have a variety of sauces made from things like cassava and potato leaf and fermented foods which lend distinct and deep flavors. They also have less common cuts of meat that tend to be on the bone with tendons etc which I really like. They are super tender and flavorful. They even have things like cow foot which is actually quite delicious. But, they also have crowd pleasers like jerk chicken.
There's something for everyone, but it's an absolute must visit for those with an adventurous palate. The other day i had a beef on the bone soup with a yoghurt flavoring that was outstanding. It's also inexpensive. I stuffed myself for lunch the other day and it was only 8.50.
Absolutely one of the top 5 places I love...
Read moreAs a huge fan of home style cooked food, this establishment was 1 of the very few in the city that I would visit regularly. This city needs more resturants like this, scoop your own food and pay by the weight, instead of all these fast food chains and expensive take out orders that will still leave u hungry. Now I'm probably being too nice giving them any stars at all, because in this covid era we're living in, u would expect all businesses to have a strict sanitary practice in place - to my surprise there wasn't a single glove or hand sanitizer in sight when I walked in. I had to ask for gloves, and it seemed to ANNOY the older gentleman that was getting it for me. In a grumpy voice, he said "of course I got gloves, if u ask me I'll give it to u." What a stank attitude he had. Is there a good reason why the gloves n sanitizer weren't put out so customers can go straight to it instead of asking? Maybe this is why it's so quiet in there u can hear...
Read moreSo, I've been to this spot before, and gotta say, the grub was top-notch! A buddy told me they got shut down recently. Turns out, they racked up a whopping 96 food safety violations. Yep, you heard that right, 96! Just so you know, you usually get a 'C' grade if you hit 28 points or more.
Now, back in the day, I used to manage in food service, and hearing this made my stomach turn. It's really hard to get that many violations unless you really don't care. Thankfully, I dodged the bullet and didn't get sick, but you won't catch me going back there anytime soon. Seriously, it's not worth the risk.
I've heard a joke before that goes, "The dirtier the place, the better the food." Not sure if I agree with that, but maybe this is...
