Canaletto is a restaurant that locals love! In a huge city Canaletto is a refuge, an oasis where you go to relax and have a great time knowing that you will be taken care of by the first rate staff while enjoying their FANTASTIC food. Literally everything they make is glorious and while the menu reads simply - lamb chops, halibut, soft shell crab, tuna tartare, rabbit, venison, and all the homemade pastas - the freshness of their ingredients is second to none.
You will not find fresher seafood anywhere in NYC and that's because the chef goes to the Fulton fish market at MIDNIGHT 3 times a week. Last night I had gazpacho with crab - so good - and Cacio e Pepe (pasta with romano and black pepper ) that is both so hard to make and yet appears deceptively simple when made well - it melted in my mouth.
My husband had what we call the best tuna tartare in the city, so good because it trusts the quality of the tuna - you will not find fresher tuna in NYC unless you're on a boat pulling it out of the sea, and the in-season soft shell crab, which if it's available, well just order it!
The desserts are all made in-house so please save room, I honestly don't know how they do it, but they do! And the bar, well I'll just say this - they really know how to fix a great martini - ice cold, filled to the brim, perfectly delivered - they practically have diamonds in them :-). In the heart of New York City, this is a place that makes you feel like you've come home, and the truth is, you have. Tell Elvis that...
Read moreSummary: good appetizers, average wine, okay dinner, and poor/unprofessional service. Wouldn’t recommend for an important date but good for average dinner.
Came here for our anniversary dinner on a Wednesday and arrived around 8:50– they close at 10 pm. We thought that was acceptable, but from the start the server was eager to push us out. Came by every few mins for our order, poured very heavy pours of our wine bottle to speed us up, and when I was still deciding he kept mentioning the kitchen can make anything I want because its dead.
The server and the guy refilling would stand right in front of us while we’re eating which is not relaxing. To top it all off, at the end of the dinner he said, “do you need anything else? Dont want to rush you but….” and walked off. If you’re ready to go home thats fine and should give us to a new server, but if someone comes in over an hour before close & paying $80/person for dinner then I’d expect more...
Read moreLoved almost everything about this place. One bad thing is we asked our server for recommendations and he couldn't give us anything. couldn't even make anything up to seem like he knew. Just in reply asked "what do you like?" and then told us to get that. We're asking for your recommendation! If we were getting something we already know we like we wouldn't need to ask you. But besides that the food was delicious and services was quick and attentive. Tiramisu was amazing! I met up with my girlfriend for dinner not knowing we were going to dinner or even that place and I felt very under dressed so word of advice, dress...
