I’ve been going to Charles for years, from when he was at the restaurant located by 155th street. Food was better than too…and cheaper. The food is still good, I was skeptical when he expanded because I know how often the quality goes down. I’d say, it’s still pretty good. I always get the smothered fried chicken (extra gravy) with collard greens and macaroni & cheese. I used to get the yams but they’d been lacking in real authentic flavor so I skip them. Cornbread 5/5. Tasty, right amount of sweetness, slightly fluffy. Collard greens 4.5/5. Pretty good, add some meat and I’d rate it a five. Seasoned well, cooked slowly and they’re not canned. Smothered fried chicken 5/5. My fave dish. This man can do the hell out of some gravy. Chicken is always cooked well and seasoned to perfection. Oh and I always ask for and they give me extra gravy. Macaroni and cheese 4.5/5. It’s been getting better since the expansion. Sometimes, it’d be good and other times it’s just okay. Right amount of cheese in it. Fruit Punch 3/5. Typical koolaid. Not crazy about it but I always drink it. I wish they’d offer a half and half or Arnold Palmer. I’ll try the sweet tea one day too. Overall, I could write more, but an easy 5/5 for ME. I appreciate that he’s a southern black American man running this restaurant, lots of other soul food joints are ran by others. I have an old review from his old spot on Yelp, but this is pretty good. Keep up the excellent work sir!

I thought this place had closed during pandemic, so I was pleasantly surprised to see there were 3 locations to choose from. I knew I should have gone to the flagship location, but I decided to go to 125 instead. Bad move. Charles wasn’t there and he was always around the other two stores when I would stop in. The 1st girl seemed new but she was pleasant and welcoming. The other girl short with braids asked if I wanted 2 pieces with the plate which threw me because the plate comes with 3 pieces. Then she asked white meat or dark and proceeded to give me legs. I didn’t notice it with the smothered order but I noticed with mine. Then she takes the little tray for my chicken, so I say to her just give me the same tray you gave for the smothered chicken and she ignored me and proceeded to put it in the small tray that wouldn’t close and wrapped a rubber band around it. When I saw my chicken hanging out I asked for a bigger tray again. She apologized and told me that’s what she was told to do. Regarding the food. Chicken had a lot of fat and skin. Made me feel like it wasn’t cleaned. Chicken was missing something. The smothered chicken is usually cooked in the gravy but she took the regular fried chicken and poured dark gravy on top. Like gravy for the mashed potatoes. Not how Charles had it in other stores. Sides were delicious. Big portions.

I don’t usually speak down on Black businesses, that’s never my style. I know the grind, I know what it takes to even open those doors. But I’m tired of walking into spots in Harlem and being treated like my money don’t count just because I used an app and got the “discount” plate

Twice now I pulled up to this soul food spot. First time, dude acted like handing me a bag of food was doing me a favor. Negative energy all through it. I’m outside, thinking about leaving a review, and suddenly he slides me a bag like I’m supposed to be grateful but still with the attitude.

Second time, same story. Same person. Same vibe. I ordered heavy from this place before, paid full price, never had a problem. But the minute I use Too Good To Go? Different treatment. Like now I’m less than. Like I don’t deserve respect because I didn’t pay “top dollar.

It’s not even the food food is good. It’s the way some workers move. I’ve met cool people in that same restaurant who show love. But one bad apple at the front can poison the whole tree. If I was the owner, I’d never let that slide. You don’t intimidate customers, you don’t make them feel small.

Here’s the truth: you get more love from the Spanish spots or the white-owned spots on that app than you do from some of our own. And that hurts to say. But it’s real. I’m all for supporting us, but I can’t keep supporting a place that treats me like I’m begging. I pay for my food. Respect that.

I’ll speak on this on my radio show, not out of hate, but out of love hoping somebody listens. Because at the end of the day, we should be treating our people better, not worse. Kindness don’t...

Having been introduced to this spot via a very robust online article where people were raving about this restaurant, I went there with much anticipation!

I enjoyed the fact that a older black gentleman has successfully been in the game for so long! I definitely celebrate him and his restaurant.

The vibe: Twas cool...clearly take out only. The people were nice. except one young cashier lady who we ended getting a smile from. We waited on line but not for long. The process seemed like a well oiled machine. We were in and out in 10 minutes.

The food: This is where I was a tad bit disappointed.

Mac n cheese - needed a bit more seasoning. The texture was cool...the look was amazing. Just didn't taste the way I though it would. 1 to 5 stars. I'd give it a 4.

Greens: Seasoned well. I not a fan of too much salt so this was perfect. I add my hot sauce and kept it moving!

Yams = NO!!! They were bland and like a 1 on the sweet scale. No sign of cinnamon or nutmeg or even brown sugar which are the main ingredients in this dish. My colleague said they tasted like they were from the can. That is a BIG no no for soul food!!

Peach cobbler - Wasn't a fan of the breading and not enough cobbler syrup. It has potential though.

THE CHICKEN - was really good! It was well cooked but still juicy. This is the staple dish and it met a big boy's standards! lol

All in all, I would go back but I would probably get the chicken only and go to Amy Ruths for the sides!!

Don't let MY review deter you though...please go and support this lovely man. Your taste buds...
