Oh my this was an experience. Got the chance to get to Chrissy’s Pizza a spot that has now long blown up in a huge way and it simply was a true NYC experience and something uniquely original. A great story Chris started making pizza a few years ago now out of his apartment. I had known Chris many years ago at work, and always admired his work ethic and surely his taste in art and music and movies. Over the years I saw him perform in great bands , front great bands all sorts of things he worked for a record label all sorts of stuff I really liked , I always admired from afar.
As a huge consumer of music I thought this was awesome. When I saw Chris was making pizza I was really intrigued I even picked his brain a few times I could tell he was on to something . He was using the baking steel out of a plain old apartment oven. He inspired me to learn as well I bought my own baking steel a cool product and my attempts were minimal at best with many failed attempts to launch the pies into the oven 😆 but I loved doing it and trying . Chris definitely went method for this labor of love it is almost like an actor preparing for a role he’s the Robert DeNiro gaining 100 pounds to play Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull.
He studied learned from the best a true pizza legend the late Andrew Belucci . Chris did it all on his own doing the research studying the science of pizza getting that flavor he wanted , I wouldn’t attempt to ask him what he uses for tomatoes. In a few short years the guy is blowing up the NYC pizza scene and has a shop of his own . I can’t imagine the blood sweat and tears that went into this. And to top it all off the shop is a tribute to Chris’ late father who always instilled the love of pizza in him , that struck a chord with me for sure I feel that a lot and I respect the hell out of it thinking of my dad everyday. Great portrait up on the wall of Chris’ dad just perfect.
Wishing Chris and his team nothing but the best I want to see what’s next , get out to Greenpoint folks ….get a pie or 2 experience what a New York pie is this is it! Only a few places left like this, there may be a line when you get here , there may be some haters but with art there are the critics . You are a real one Chris , you found Living Proof. 🍕 Was awesome to be there. It smells awesome too! God bless! The pizza is phenomenal only way I can describe it is that first slice you had as a kid with your family at a pizzeria and it was fun and life was good and you didn’t have a care in the world. Pretty crazy.
They have a contest where if you finish the whole pie yourself you get your picture on the wall, the journey was the destination I almost crushed it all but fell short one slice to go. I am on a diet after all 😆 That’s...
Read moreLocal Greenpointer only a few blocks away from Chrissy's. This is the best New York Style Pizza in Greenpoint hands down and maybe in the city itself. I moved here about 8 years ago and there were plenty of options for pie but none were amazing. Chrissy's took a spot which had seen 3-4 failed coffee shops in 8 years and remodeled it into a masterpiece. The thought and care taken on the aesthetic alone brings me joy each time I visit.
The pie is a work of art. The crust is perfect and it holds without fail delicious to the last bite. I don't know what they are doing to make this sauce but it has a complexity that stops you after your first bite just to think about the time they are putting in to the sauce alone. They use a perfect amount of cheese and after the pie comes out of the oven they freshly grate a little more on top (I believe it's a bit of fresh parm but I have not asked) and that fresh cheese melts seamlessly on top before you dig in. Each pie is given attention and care which is why they have you queue up to order, which is why they only serve so many per day, which is why every time I order from Chrissy's I get a consistently delicious experience.
I took a look at the other reviews here and I had to read some of the one star reviews. First off, these people are entitled to their opinion but I can't respect someone who gives one star to what is obviously an awesome pie... "I wanted two but we could only get one..." or "We waited for an hour..." these are not reasons to rate a place low, these are actually reasons people should check the place out. The reason you are sometimes limited to one pizza is because there is an hour long line and they are trying to make sure there is enough for as many people as possible. When was the last time you went to a pizza place that was 'Sold Out' of Pizza? I've never seen one until Chrissy's and that's because it's so damn good.
Look, you don't have to take my word for it... check them out for yourself, and write your own review. If you want to avoid the line come out on a Monday as it tends to be their lighter traffic day. I had never heard about Chrissy's until it moved down the block but I'm sure glad they did. It's worth the hype... Don't...
Read moreMy first experience at the Chrissy’s storefront happened in December’s it could have been the 22nd, or the 23rd. I would have to check my diary to to be sure. I was doing some holiday shopping in Greenpoint. I had a girlfriend that needed the finest wireless headphones money could buy and her mother needed cotton gloves to ward off the harsh, arctic winds of north. It occurred to me that perhaps this would be a great week to stop into Chrissy’s, un-befuddled by the formerly prevalent throngs of Greenpointees and Willimsburgers, so I strolled down Nassau and pleasantly walked right in. Immediately greeted by a welcoming staff, and Home Alone just beginning on the TV, it felt only natural to eat in the restaurant, and a lovely cheese pizza, just for me, was ordered. The smells and sounds of a pizza kitchen operating on all cylinders can intoxicate one familiar with the stress and the rhythm, and with every nostalgic scene of Home Alone and the aromas of cheese and dough and oil snaking through the air and into my typically stuffed nostrils, my hunger grew. I watched as Chrissy himself made final preparations to the pies before they were served on trays or boxed up and the excitement grew. A few patrons present were participating in the “eat the whole pie” challenge, and as my flawlessly prepared cheese pizza came out, I posted up next to Kevin McCallister on the little tv and settled in to enjoy my pie. The presentation was without error. I pulled up my first piece and… perfection. The crust impeccable, the sauce precisely rationed, and the cheese… goodness that cheese took me to a place from the past, just like Home Alone at Christmas- a pocket of my heart that’s been closely guarded and protected only to be cracked open during moments like this. I stood there and eat my entire pizza. There was nary a bite not fully savored, not blissful.
I have been back three times since that stop and every pizza has been fantastic. The staff treat customers warmly and with respect and are dedicated to their craft. The energy and feel of the space conjures a perfect, wsrm nostalgia but without any attempt at kitsch.
I love Chrissy’s pizza. Might have to...
