Ambiance and Service are 5-Star! Food not so much. Canned Black Eyed Peas, decent, only because they added green and red peppers but you could taste them not being freshly made. Big disappointment. Cabbage - NO seasoning at all! Fail and Cabbage is easy! Collards - Had carrots sliced inside and braised done in turkey broth. Edible. Cooked down well but needed MORE love! Must have some type of smoked meat or smoked salt and peppers and onions, otherwise, bland! Mac & Cheese - although the Elbows were not al dente, they weren't too badly overcooked. The Cheddar cheese choice was good but it became grainy, which is usually cheap cheese, especially when there's no Bechamel to melt cheese evenly into. This Baked was "my" type of Mac & Cheese preference but without the graininess. Fried Chicken was decent. Could stand a good Brine first, as it became less flavorful closer to the bone but overall, not too bad. Thigh and Breast stayed juicy all of the way through. The Waffle was standard Belgium-type. Baked Turkey Wings are on steroids, humungous. They were underseasoned and underbaked. Had to take home to add seasonings and bake an additional hour. They do give a nice portion, had 3 large wings. Potato Salad was inedible. Way Too Much cheap mayo, definitely NOT Hellmans or other premium (Duke's, Blue Plate, Sir Kensington, etc.) Has a splatter of frugal relish and no seasoning, mustard nor eggs. The Cornbread tastes like a mix of Jiffy, a Cake Mix and extra Cornmeal. It's VERY sweet, cake-like texture but was again, grainy, which means the batter wasn't mixed well enough. The Apple Cobbler, although we appreciated the al dente apples, meaning, they don't cookdown their fruit, it had that canned gelatin glaze and the crust, which seemed homemade, was undone and ruined it. It was raw! Overall, the Apple Cobbler's flavor wasn't oversweet and apples used were good. Macintosh, Pink Lady or something. (Not Gala or Granny Smiths, softer, milder apples were used.) The "canned" Peach Cobbler only faired better than the Apple because the crust was cooked! It still needed flavor. Barely-to-none of any cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. used. The Peaches were al dente too, which was perfect for us. We understand why Cans are used but they MUST be treated properly, to pull off a real Homemade Cobbler. I know food costs are crazy but if a place takes a "prudent" route with ingredients, they MUST be able to sufficiently hide the bargained depreciation of it all. FLAVOR STILL MUST be met, especially when it comes to Soul Food! Cornbread's has a few locations and a cookie-cutter menu. It shouldn't be hard to put WAY MORE Love & Soul into the food! We were in the neighborhood and had been waiting for a long time for this place to finally open and for our Southern Family, it's a hard pass. It will fit the needs of others, as there's a limited selection of these type of restaurants. It is HARD to find consistently decent Soul Food in NYC!!! Only a handful (Peaches - Brooklyn, Melba's & Amy Ruth's -...
Read moreI went to this spot on MLK day. It was freezing outside and on my way in I slipped and fell on the un-shoveled ice and snow in front of this establishment. The young woman that was standing at the end of the counter was unwelcoming an looked miserable. That gave me pause as I wondered if she was ill. I didn't want her preparing my plate if she was. I told her I fell in front of the establishment. I thought perhaps this would garner a response or an action, she rolled her eyes. Me and my party moved on to the cashier I believe this gentleman was the manager. I told him It was very slippery and I had just fell in front of the establishment. He said "I'm sorry to hear that." He looked annoyed. It was our first time, but we began to place orders. I asked him what was in the drinks he seemed like I was annoying him by asking. I'm not sure why the descriptions of what's in the drinks isn't simply printed on the large beautifully lit menu above the register just some fancy drink names. We had kids with us so of course we needed to know which ones were cafinated. I asked for Seltzer water and he said it was in the machine. There was none in the machie. I asked him about it later and I am still awaiting his response, he never bothered to get back to me or refund me the cost of the drink. The decor is lovely. We were a party of 4 and needed to sit away from the draft if the door, so we chose a lovely round banquet in the corner. The table had not been cleaned so we asked that it be wiped down. The attitude girl said "there is a table over there", as she pointed toward the door. We explained that we wanted a table away from the cold. We waited patiently at the table for it to get wiped down...the woman with the bad energy brought 2 dinners over and we asked again if the table could be wiped down. Her response was "the food is hot." We were confused. As we waited for the rest of our order, no one showed up to wipe the the table so my friend walked over and asked again...she mentioned other tables again. There was more hesitation but after the entire staff put their heads together someone came out of the kitchen and wiped down the table.
The food was decent. The collards were mooshy and over salted. The cornbread was literally pound cake so too sugary for my taste. The turkey wing serving was generous and the cornbread dressing was good with the gravy. There is a $1.00 upcharge for gravy and it was about a teaspoon sprinkled on top of the wings. The bit I was able to get at was good with the dressing.
Lastly, there was old food caked up around the garbage can.
I will order again not sure if I will dine in again until its warm and de-iced both indoors and out in the front of the...
Read moreUpdate: I raved about this spot to a best friend since she lives in the area. Since we wanted a place we can eat and chill, I recommended this location. I’m not sure what was going on today but the vibe was completely different than when I first came. (Guess I had high expectations for this place). We ordered our food and sat down at a booth. We literally waited 40 minutes for our food to arrive. I didn’t understand why the wait was so long since this establishment runs kind of like Boston Market. One of the employees (Shamadi) who was cleaning the dining area kept coming to our table reassuring us that our food was coming out. When the food arrived, it was pretty much on the cooler side. I took my turkey wings back to the counter and explained to another employee that we waited 40 mins for the food and was told the wings were fresh. How could it be if they were cool? The assistant manager who was packing bags rudely asked the employee if I had eaten the wings. The assistant manager (I believe her name was Samantha. couldn’t really see her name tag) didn’t even apologize or seem too concerned with the situation. When Shamadi found out, she apologized and gave me a fresh set of wings & even compensated us with another item for each of us for the inconvenience. If Shamadi wasn’t there today, I probably would’ve gave this place 1 star. The assistant manager needs to take a leadership class from Shamadi. Her behavior was completely inappropriate in front of a paying customer. ——-/////—— I was driving down EP when I noticed this restaurant and decided to stop by. The workers are friendly and greets every customer that walks in. My mom ordered the Turkey Wings with Yams & Collard Greens; I ordered the Turkey Wings with Mac & Cheese and Yams. I ordered my son the 2pc Chicken with Yellow Rice. The food was pretty good. Everything was flavorful. We thought the restaurant didn’t have any high chairs for toddlers so we asked one of the workers who brought one over. Nicolette was a great help while we were there. She brought the high chair, checked in on us throughout, and brought us take home boxes to pack our food. Her hospitality was superb!!! Definitely recommend this restaurant. And to top it off, the dining...
