I don’t know what kind of home you guys have to consider this place a « like home place », but for me it’s definitely a skam. The bathroom is soooo dirty, the rooms as well, it is definitely someone’s basement who’s running a fake hostel (I mean it is “international visitors only”, I didn’t pay attention before coming but that and all the bad comments mean everything). The girls’ room’s door doesn’t close at all and it’s right on the entrance. Also I had booked a room in a 4 people room and when I arrived it was apparently full so I was dislocated in a bigger room (how can it be full when you have a reservation made few weeks ago?). The “hostel” was really loud, I felt asleep at 1 am and there were still music and people screaming, who I could hear despite my earplugs. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were bed bugs. Be careful of yourself!!! The only good thing was the nice staff, and the understanding when I asked for a refund for the next night I had booked. Don’t go there! New York is really expensive but even though, don’t put yourself in this kind of situation.

Was there during winter of 2019 : hot water was rare and rooms were heated with old-school and noisy individual radiators. So far, these conditions were OK considering the price. But what I remember the most was this very weird "cool" atmosphere they tried to create on the common room, playing movies 24/24 with very high volume. Making the room totally unfit for both chilling, having a conversation, or trying to concentrate on your plans for the stay. Tried to put the volume down once and someone from the staff put it high again, whereas there was NOBODY in the room but me on the computer, trying to concentrate on stuff. Complete absurdity. Totally unrecommanded if you like a bit of quietness to start or end the day. (been a million times I thought about writing this to alarm quiet travelers to avoid this place. Don't know if this very wrong "movies" idea is still going...

NOT FOR US CITIZENS: I did not have a chance to stay here- One day before my arrival, I was sent an email stating you can not be a US citizen to stay here. This information is not on many of the booking websites. Be forewarned, by the time you get their cancellation email, prices may have changed and rooms may be booked out. Here is the email sent, typos and all: "Hello, this is the Brooklyn Riviera,Sorry we must inform you that we only accept international guest and no American citizens. You will need to cancel with hostel world to retrieve your deposit.we apologize for any inconvenience"

EDIT: It looks like the price per night has tripled since I completed my booking. They likely canceled my reservation just so they could get more for the room. Pretty shameful business tactic. Just...

Highly recommended!!!! :) I stayed only one night at this hostel. I’ve traveled many countries with the hostel but this is one of the best! Affordable price is for travelers to travel cheap by its owner Talib, he’s nice and he wakes up early to clean up everything and prepare for the guests breakfast. I stayed at ten girls bunk bed but I had everything I need, I checked in quite late but he welcomed me. The guests were respectful and friendly, I made one good Polish friend here. Everything’s clean and comfy. No complains! Coffee and breakfast were for free. I can’t believe they stay this price. I even asked the owner to raise the price up, it’s the cheapest in New York for sure. I would love to use this hostel again in the future :) thank you Talib!

From the moment I arrived to the whole stay, I lived the vibes and the way everything had a fun memorable theme like with knights at the entrance and a really cozy private backyard and lounge area. Wonderful people to meet too. Best place I've stayed in New York for sure. Really grateful to Talib for managing so many things here. So much personalized communication beforehand too. Appreciated the new surprise breakfast each morning too and there's also a really good Mexican place beside here and a cafe nearby too
