I had the chance to finally try DOMODOMO over the weekend and overall the food was delicious and the service was poor.
Let's start with the good aspects of my trip. Both my wife and I ordered the domokase. I was extremely pleased with the food. My favorite was the king salmon sushi and the miso black cod. Items that I thought fell a bit flat on the tasting menu was the soup in the second course, the pasta, uni sushi and the dessert. All the items were tasty with unique flairs and it was a fun food tasting experience. Also we ordered two cocktails which were both enjoyable.
Onto the bad, we had a 630 reservation fairly early for dinner time, but we were seated at the door. There is nothing blocking the wind except a small added vestibule. My wife wore her jacket for the remainder of dinner. I asked to be move into the restaurant they told us it would be at least a fifteen minute wait. So we declined, however it took about fifteen minutes for our server to show up and greet us. I am uncertain why I wasn't offered the opportunity to move but I didn't pursue the matter more.
We finally placed our order, and the dinning experience was good. The person running the food and clearing the tables was excellent. However, I never saw the person that took my order or had any idea who my server was, one time the person busing our table (who maybe was our server?) asked if our meal was good and if we needed more to drink. We asked for more water and he never brought it out. So by the time the meal ended I sat and waited about fifteen minutes before I asked the hostess for the check. I never met a server and have no idea if anyone was even waiting my table. Which is quite shocking when you paid a hundred dollars a plate.
Additionally the couple next to me had horrible service as well. Items they ordered were never brought to the table. The barely available server apologized and no manager came to speak with them. The item was simply taken off the bill, I thought this was truly horrible customer service. Then to further the issue the couple was brought the wrong check with the wrong credit card. I just think this is appalling and to boot they had the same server as us or at least who I thought was our server.
It's truly a shame that a place with such great food cannot accommodate their patrons with good service. I may come back and try again because I enjoyed the food. But this is the second time I have run into issues with poor service at this restaurant. This first time was a reservation mishap and they wouldn't answer the phone so my wife and I went to another restaurant only to be called thirty minutes after our meal start time. We blew this off but I think it is probably an accurate representation of...
Read moreI came to DOMODOMO with high expectations, especially since it has received Michelin recognition for several years in a row. Unfortunately, my experience was quite disappointing.
I ordered several hand rolls, including Spicy Salmon with ichimi and fried potato chips, Salmon with sesame seed, Spicy Yellowtail with furikake and lime pepper, Negi Toro with scallion, Oyster Mushroom with seaweed crunch, Miso Black Cod with kabocha purée and pickled mustard seed, Blue Crab with garlic butter and mayo, and the Lobster roll. On paper, the combinations sounded creative and exciting, but the execution was a letdown. Every hand roll I received came wrapped in seaweed that was soft and soggy rather than crisp. Because the seaweed had been exposed to air for too long, the texture and freshness were completely gone. A proper hand roll should have warm rice, fresh filling, and crispy seaweed that cracks when you bite into it — here, none of that was present, and the flavors completely fell flat.
I also tried the Eggplant Katsu, which was very heavy and oily. The breading absorbed too much oil, and without dipping it into the sauce provided, it was nearly inedible. It lacked the delicate balance that this dish should have. As for sushi, I sampled one piece, and the vinegar flavor in the rice was overwhelmingly strong. The balance between rice and fish was missing, and the fish itself didn’t shine at all. For a restaurant that has held Michelin recognition, I was genuinely surprised by how weak the flavors were.
The only positives were the good service and pleasant atmosphere. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the space itself has a nice modern vibe. However, when the food doesn’t deliver, it’s hard to overlook everything else. I honestly don’t understand how this restaurant continues to receive Michelin accolades year after year.
Overall, I left feeling disappointed and would not return. I was expecting a standout hand roll experience, but instead, I found myself questioning the reputation of the restaurant. If anyone is a fan of DOMODOMO, I would truly appreciate recommendations on what to order, because based on my experience, none of the dishes lived up...
Read moreBest Sushi restaurant in NYC! Omg the sushi are all fresh and everything taste good!!
Location: It is located in Houston St. The interior is very intimate, but you can wear casual. I wear scrubs (coming from work, im a nurse). Lot of seatings and there is a bar.
Service: our server was nice, explains well the sushi that we are eating. The girl in the front desk looked at me and my friend because we are wearing scrubs as if she does not want us to enter.
Food: you have to order DOMAKASE! It has everything that you need to eat here! Lol everything is good! My faves are TUNA CONE: omg so good, the spicy mayo is inside the cone as if that is the ice cream and tuna is just so fresh on top. ROASTED CAULIFLOWER: cauliflower never tasted this good, and you can eat the green pea miso spread on its own, that is how good it is. SCALLOP RISOTTO: omg this was the bomb! It will be cooked in front of you! It taste like paella but so much better! KABAYAKI: omg the seabass is sweet as if you are not eating a fish! DONBURI: even though the daikon soup is just a little bit, the wagyu don is soo good! CHEF’s CHOICE SUSHI: everything was delicious and fresh, im not sure the names are but they all good, my favorite was the toro sushi. SPICY TUNA HANDROLL: so good too! Not that spicy. CRABMEAT with CRUNCH SEAWEED: reminds me of tacos because of the crunch! BLACK SESAME PANNA COTTA: my fave cause the black sesame has earthy taste and the panna cotta is so silky smooth. HOJICHA PUDDING: taste like tea and the pudding was so soft, melts in the mouth. PEACH LYCHEE: omg so good, the sake is little bit strong but the combination of the peach and lychee is perfect. WATERMELON COOLER: so refreshing and light.
Price rating: 8/10, thats the only thing cause its Michelin Restaurant it will be expensive, but it is so good!
