Banter is another great New York Aussie Cafe in the West Village. Popped in on a Saturday at around 1pm and sat outside under some heaters with a couple of flat whites while waiting for a table. It only took about 20 minutes before our table for 2 was ready, well timed as we had just finished our coffees (groups of 4 were getting seated pretty fast too).
The coffee here is excellent and you can just pop in to grab a cup to takeaway if you feel like it. However the food really is worth sticking around for. If youâre after a classic Australian breakfast favorite then you canât go wrong with a bacon and egg roll. For those non-Australians out there a bacon an egg roll is usually a bread roll with bacon, a fried egg and BBQ sauce that you can usually grab at the corner store or petrol station. Banterâs take makes the classic even more delicious by adding a few more ingredients like arugula and caramelized onions. Their sweet potato fries are probably the best Iâve had in the city. Crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, dunk them in the spicy aioli and prepare to enter potato heaven. Also recommend grabbing a side of peas if youâre really hungry.
Big fan of this spot, will definitely be coming back to work my way through other dishes like their mushroom toast and burger. They are now open for dinner and also serve cocktails (espresso martinis anyone?),...
Read moreDuring a recent trip to NYC, we were delighted to be recommended this charming spot for breakfastâand it did not disappoint! This cozy, hygge-inspired cafĂŠ was the perfect place for a late morning meal. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff and seated at a quaint little table.
We took our time exploring the menu, brimming with intriguing âBrekkieâ options. Ultimately, we opted for the classic Two Eggs Any Style and the Bacon & Egg Rollâa hearty sandwich packed with fried egg, crispy bacon, pickled onions, tomato jam, and garlic aioli, all nestled in a fresh ciabatta roll. There was even an option to add mashed avocado, which sounded tempting, but the sandwich was already so generously filled! Honestly, it was so substantial that it could have easily been shared.
To accompany our meal, we ordered lattes that arrived beautifully adorned with intricate latte art. The atmosphere was made even more inviting by the walls adorned with paintings by local artists, a thoughtful touch that showcased and supported the creative community.
Outside, a well-shaded seating area offered plenty of space to enjoy a leisurely breakfast without feeling rushed. Itâs the kind of place where you can truly relax and savor your morning. Weâll definitely be returning the next time...
Read moreWe stopped by Banter for brunch on a Saturday around 11am and were surprised the wait was already over an hour. In total we waited nearly an hour and a half and while the food and drinks were tasty, Iâm not sure I would wait that long again.
We were seated inside and, despite it being pretty cold outside, wished we were seated in the outdoor seating area. The inside is quite cozy and loud since the drinks station is dead center, so you have to tune out the clanging and crashing of cups and plates. The outside area was much quieter despite being near the street and cars.
We ordered the banter bowl with grilled chicken, and the green vitality and fresh start juices.
The banter bowl tasted very fresh and light while still being very filling. The miso ponzu dressing tied all the fresh ingredients together and definitely made the fish. The chicken was slightly rough and dry.
The green vitality was my favorite juice and tasted very green, with particular notes of celery. The fresh start was quite tart and had a nice hint of ginger, but wasnât for me.
Overall I left Banter feeling satisfied, refreshed, and full enough to continue my day...
