We were looking to stay in Soho and wanted to save on accommodations so we can do some extra shopping and enjoy restaurants in the city. The pictures of Soho54 looked decent online and thought the rate was still pricey on a holiday weekend, but this was less expensive than other hotels in the area. I didn't mind outdated furniture, but was hoping for cleanliness, and liked the fact that they were supposed to have a bar in the hotel to hang out in before calling it a night. Unfortunately, I was disappointed the moment I arrived. The lobby was super tight, and the so-called bar was closed and non-functional. We had asked if we can be on the same floor (via email pre-departure) of the other couple travelling with us, and had no reply. Even when we asked at arrival, they said they couldn't accommodate us. Our room was very small and outdated. The furniture was ancient, the couch by our bed had what seemed to be a cigarette hole in it, the wallpaper was torn and yellowed in tone, the bathroom sink counter was detached from the wall (if you lean on it, it may drop), the tiles in our shower looked fairly new but the shower stalls had visible grime and rust, the soap dish was cracked, and the furniture looked like it was borrowed from 1950. No effort on the part of management to clean up the hotel and rooms, not even basic maintenance. The positive in this experience: the location was great (they had a nearby lot accommodate for parking, but 65$USD + tax daily, no deal for hotel guests). The staff was nice, one of the team members was really kind to let us take as many water bottles as we needed since it was super hot out. Then you have the guy who says he'll have housekeeping bring up towels asap, and it never happened. I get it, New York City is expensive, but what we paid was high for this experience and for the quality of this property. For those looking for a place to rest for the night and not really looking for comfort, this could be a good choice, like I said - location was great. However, this place did not meet my standards for a "home away from home" nor my standards of...
Read moreOverall, for the price I paid this was pretty poor all round and I’m struggling to find something positive to say. The location was good? I guess. I know it’s not the finest hotel in NYC, and with that my expectations were low. Somewhere to rest between my planned activities was all i wanted. Somehow, this hotel didn’t even meet my low expectations. The room smelled like a subway and when we mentioned that to then - in addition to the fact we had not received any housekeeping for the whole time we’d been there thus far and were out of soap, towels and toilet paper - they seemed apologetic, but ultimately didn’t do anything. We ended up getting housekeeping once for our 5 night stay. I seemed to get conflicting responses as to whether this was normal, or if we were supposed to “request” it, as each person I spoke with seemed to have a different response to that, but when I booked the hotel stated we received “daily” housekeeping and there was no implication a request was required, nor was I told to when I checked in. Additionally, and perhaps most frustratingly, one of the two elevators was down for the duration of the stay. This wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for the fact that the staff were using the elevators constantly to search for other staff by pressing every floor and sticking their heads out before continuing on. We were forced to either wait up to 20 minutes for an elevator, or climb the 11 flights of stairs up and down to our room to meet reservation times we’d set. When we mentioned this to the staff, they just shrugged and said “the lift is broken” and didn’t even offer an apology or even seem to care. I get it, the elevator is broken but then perhaps staff shouldn’t be using it to poke their heads around and look for other staff members at the expense of their guests. My recommendation to anyone looking to stay here is spend the extra money on a nicer hotel that will treat you like a human being and give you the basic amenities they list...
Read moreHorrible. The only thing this place has going for it is the location.
Booked this hotel at my company's suggestion, as it was very close to the office and super convenient to Soho. Upon checking in, I was not provided a receipt.
Going up to the rooms, the hallways were dirty and dingy. The first room I was assigned was not much better. Massive fresh stains on the floor (looked like either bodily fluids or someone had spilled milk?) that hadn't been attempted to be cleaned, dirty and damaged furniture.
I called the front desk and was told that they would give me another room. The second one was obviously in a part of the hotel that had been remodeled, so at least the interior was more up-to-date, but the cleanliness was not much better. Sheets had obviously not been changed (hairs and wrinkles galore) and the shower was filthy. Same old and dingy furniture.
At this point, I went downstairs and asked for them to rectify the situation. We settled on me just cancelling the reservation, and to their credit, no one kicked up a fuss. Took a few days for the reservation to get back onto my card, but it's all there now.
Another point of concern- I had my bags held while I was at the office and before check-in. When I asked for them to be retrieved, I was directed to a luggage storage room (unlocked)- there was no check to make sure I was actually taking my bags, and not going through another persons things. Additionally, despite signs, you do not need to use your keycard to access guest floors- not great security.
Because of the state of this place, the fact it was obviously not clean, and luggage/guest floors weren't secure...I would avoid. There are a ton of other hotels in town (we were able to snag one last minute, as a mater of fact). Location is awesome, which is why it gets two stars, but I would expect a heck of a lot more for what this...
