Traveling in El Salvador: Days 70 to 72

I had such a great time here with my girlfriend on a Friday night. There was a bit of a wait - only because they wanted to prepare a table for us by the front window. Mariachis were in the back area on a stage singing and playing their instruments and we longed to be seated there but it was alright. We still had the music. The food was incredible. I ordered something like "Chicken sautéed Mexican style" and wow it was amazing. Since it was Halloween time they had a lot of decorations up. The usual decor though was nice. From what I was told, a "Basurero" is a dump - so you see lots of old junk on the walls that actually makes the place pretty interesting to look at. This is going to be a weird thing to say but the men and women that worked here were surprisingly good looking and well mannered to boot. The place seems good for groups, dates, and even coming alone as it seemed like the bar area had some patrons that looked like they were having a great time. I always had the impression that this was just a sports bar but I was wrong. Later, more mariachis played and went around the tables to serenade people. It was fantastic. I love that this spot is in the middle of Astoria. My only gripe is that if you go later on at night there will definitely be a wait. There was a small group waiting to be seated- standing nearby nearly the entire time my girlfriend and I ate. I almost felt bad like I should finish my food quickly so they could sit. Anyway, I wish I had checked El Basurero sooner. I'll definitely go back again!

After singing for a few hours with the squad, we were all hungry and decided to hit this place called Basurero. From the outside, it looks like a small bar, but once you go through the doors, the inside is open, spacious and frankly huge. The space kind of feels like it could be in the middle of Colombia and it would look and feel the same. Except for the weather, I felt like I was on vacation. It’s that kind of a vibe. We had a fairly large group and they accommodated us fairly quickly. It seems as though they are accustomed to dealing with large parties because they handled taking and delivering our orders fairly smoothly. The food was pretty delicious and we got to try a wide variety of items from each others plates. I believe there was a bit of a complication with the bill that was sorted out, but I sensed that it left a bad taste in some of my friend’s mouths. I’m not sure of all the details, but it appears as though they were trying to take advantage of one of our more inebriated companions in regards to the bill. My main dish was this bistec al caballo. Steak with eggs and it comes with two sides. This was delicious and a huge serving. I took some home as leftovers. I also had some calamari, virgin pina colada, and a sampling of sides from my friends. The food is top notch. All that bill drama aside, I think this was a good restaurant and enjoyed the meal there. I can see myself returning in the future, after all, I don’t drink alcohol so I'll never get taken advantage of. LOL.

Today we had lunch at this place as it was recommended by a friend of mine but I always seemed to pass by it. Today I went in but next time I know just to ignore this place as if they never exist.

The bartender was extremely nice and I guess she tried to make sure we were okay but she had to run an errand (we saw her jump in a truck to do something and come back 10 mins later.) We waited for a while, we needed water and some other small things. I can't say it was her fault since it seemed like there was a manager on duty and the owner seemed to be sitting at the bar the whole time with his kids running around and making loud noises throughout the restaurant; they could have assisted her as she was sent to do an errand. But it didn't happen.

The fries sucked, I never say that about fries but in overall, who knew you could say that about a batch of fries. The burger seemed like it came out of a frozen box filled with other beef patties. The only thing that was okay was the seasoning around the chicken. The chicken seemed to be a bit dry but oh well, there wasn't an expectation of quality in this place when we first walked in.

We finished our meal with the kids still running around screaming and yelling. I was bothered at first but I ignored it. We went downstairs to go use the restroom and there we saw the kids that were making the noises the whole meal. I proceeded to use the restroom. My friend yelled out loud as she was tired of hearing the noise. She yelled and just left the restaurant because she could not take it anymore. One of the kids had this horn thing that she blew the whole time being there, another had something else he was making noise with and the other one was just screaming the whole time. I heard the conversation to what happened while I was using the restroom.

I was done and walked out of the restaurant to try to figure out where my friend had went. She told me the owner came out and screamed at her saying we came to use the restroom without buying anything in this establishment. My friend told the owner we had a meal here and we had paid for our food and went down to use the restroom afterwards. Then he proceeds to yell at my friend saying she had said something to his daughter and he wanted to "fuc*ng know!" My friend was tired of the owner's screaming and swearing, she walked away.

I have a couple of points to make:

1)the quality won't be here if you are looking for Colombian like food 2) service is slow 3) loud noise (kids of the owner who run around) 4) inconsiderate like owner who was sitting at the bar the whole time and still yells at his customers

An owner who doesn't care for his own restaurant is what's going to make this place fall short; it will be it's downfall.

The name of this restaurant is called, "El Basurero" to my understanding, I would say it's translation into English diction is "The Dump"

This place is "The Dump"

It will never be anything else nor go anywhere else. I don't understand how it has above a 3-star rating. Maybe the owner's friends all gather up on here and put a 5-star rating just to boost the overall average score of this place.

I'd say more but I think I have said enough. Good luck. Don't think this place will...

I must say this place lives up to its name. El Basurero (The Garbage in English) is located in Astoria Queens. I had higher expectations regarding this restaurant. I went with a group of 7 and as per NYC laws due to covid-19 the restaurants had to be at least to min of 25% to 33% however this restaurant was at 100% capacity. Every table was filled and they claimed it's 4 people per table which is not true. Not all tables were 6ft apart from each other and it took awhile before our waiter came to our table. So let's talk about the drinks. Drinks were good however make sure you come with snacks because the wait for food is a hour. At first we waited patiently like any other restaurant we understand it can take up to at least 30 mins on a busy night but then we noticed that other tables that had come after us were being served and we were still waiting. Our waiter was not following up . We asked 3 times in regards to the outcome of our food and waited like another 15 to 20 mins bringing the total wait to 45 to to 50 mins or so where my husband had to ask the owner what the hell was going. He came to our table to excuse himself however we still had to wait. So total wait was an 1 hr for mediocre food. My kids and guest were starving so we ate all of it but we have tasted better. Not only did they not bother to communicate the status of our food but they failed to even compensate us for the wait. They advised me there was a problem in the kitchen however other people was getting their food. Even as a courtesy, a drink or an appetizer to munch on while they get everything situated in the kitchen would have been nice. For future reference I do not recommend you bring your family or guest here unless you want to receive poor customer service. It does live up to its name...it was pure GARBAGE!!! They Failed on CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS, THEY HAVE POOR COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CUSTOMER AND STAFF AND LACK EMPATHY FOR THEIR ERRORS. Wish I can give it Zero stars but this review won't be published unless I...

Good Afternoon, My boyfriend and I decided to go to “El Basurero” on Steinway Street on Sunday, September 23, 2018 around 9pm. We entered and waited to be seated. We then got taken care of a young women with black hair not so long hair. The young women walked us to the back of the restaurant on the upper level against the wall before getting to the stairs by the back. She processed to sit us down and handed us the menu. She then informed us that somebody was going to come take our order shortly. My boyfriend & I closed our menu’s after 5 mins of deciding on what to order. We then waited for somebody to come take our order. After sitting down for an hour and a half and not being attended we decided to leave. I believe its unbelievable that NOBODY took care of us or at least get our drinks. We weren’t offered NOTHING not even water. I really hope this statement gets to the hands of the manager of this restaurant because it’s crazy and upsetting because ive been living in Astoria my entire life and I have never had a problem with any restaurants. I really hope the manager looks at the camera and realizes what kind of people he has working at that restaurant. I know that there was a camera right by out table and I do want the manager to see it. We were there from 9pm until 10pm. I understand that a restaurant it can busy but you can’t just forget about the customers that are brining in money to the restaurant. The reason why I’m saying this is because I could have easily gone to Pollo’s Mario that's located literally around the block from this restaurant. They sell the same type of food and they give 100% customer service and they don't forget about there customers! I would never recommend anybody to this restaurant because I don't want to look bad after I...
