I’ve been following Evalyn’s on IG for a while, and I’m glad I stopped by while I happened to be in Gowanus. Despite having a few TVs showing football, there wasn’t too much happening on a rainy Sunday afternoon (despite the happy hour specials on beer and apps!!). The food was great. We tried the pretzel with honey mustard (didn’t care for the beer-brie); the currywurst had an awesome house-made tomato curry sauce that paired perfectly with the white pork sausage (similar to what you’d get in Dortmund and surrounding areas in NRW) and was served with crispy fresh-cut fries; the brisket, onion purée and potatoes were a great hearty Sunday meal. I’ll try the burger next time! The draft list was awesome - a good mix of traditional German lagers and local IPAs, and a few other styles and ciders to accommodate most anyone. They had a couple interesting cans as well. Definitely a great spot to add to the list if you’re after some good beers, a great meal (also had a lot of GF and vegan options/substitutions) and great service.

I’m extremely disappointed with how our event on 4/13 turned out—it was a complete disaster. I had been in contact with Vanessa for weeks leading up to the date to make sure everything would go smoothly. I wanted everything to be perfect for my wife’s surprise celebration, but unfortunately, it was the opposite.

We reserved the window table section. My party arrived before me to set up and surprise my wife, but when they got there, they found a group of about 40 people already occupying the space. That group was being rude—not only to my guests but also to the bartenders. My sister-in-law tried to get help and was told she could move the party to the outside patio—which made no sense at all on a rainy, cold day.

When I arrived and saw the situation, I immediately asked to speak to a manager. Shockingly, one of the staff told me there was no manager present, which I found really unprofessional given the size of the crowd. He directed me to the bartenders, who were very kind and confirmed that the window section was in fact reserved for my group. I let them know I was going to politely ask the other group to remove their food and belongings so my guests could use the space—and I did just that. However, the other party decided we were going to “share” the space, and the tone they used made it clear this wasn’t going to be a respectful situation.

The whole vibe was off. The music was just some random rock playlist—not mixed like I was told it would be—and the bar was packed with people who weren’t even part of my event. Everything felt completely unorganized and borderline hostile.

With our reserved area taken over, the atmosphere uncomfortable, and staff unable to manage the situation properly, we made the difficult choice to leave early to avoid a larger issue. That should’ve never had to happen. We had put so much into planning this celebration, and it was ruined.

I doubt we’ll ever return to this bar, and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone planning a...

I was extremely disappointed and frustrated at how the evening turned out. What was supposed to be a birthday event on Saturday 4/12 with our own reserved space and music list with waiter service turned out to be a complete disaster. My friend spoke with an “event coordinator” for a month leading up to this and was promised her own space for 40 people in a separate room. When we arrived there there was already a party seated at their reserved space and we were told by the bartender that we were to have all the high tops but we found out that the people that were already there were told the same thing. I communicated with the other party to ask if they would share the space with us since we were both promised the same space which they were nice enough to do so. However, as the night progressed very quickly it became over crowded and other parties were also promised the same space which in turn started aggression between everyone. The “event coordinator” overbooked three parties with each party having 40-60 ppl. The bar itself is very small to accommodate that many people for parties. There was no hostess or waiter service it was highly unorganized, overpriced for drinks that were very small and some bartenders were not very nice. We ended up leaving after a short while since the people in the corner were there before us and other party that came in was taking over the space as well as us. It was just a mish mosh and causing people to argue. One of The bartenders gave me contact numbers for the owner and others to express my complaints but I feel they wouldn’t have gotten anywhere. I asked to be compensated but this was not an option. I would never recommend this bar to anyone and suggest that the owner get a hostess and waiter and more organized as well as do not promote party space if they...

Me & a friend decided to throw a birthday party here after seeing their ad for “free parties”. Inquired & was told we would have a private section to ourselves that would not interfere with other guests, plus a “personal bartender” along with being able to set up some decorations. Upon arrival there was still a major party of people seated right at the same section we were promised. They overbooked for the money & in return gave us a bad experience. Said they would be gone exactly 30 minutes later only for the party to still be there over an hour which made us have to work with the little we had. Our guests arrived only to all be sat the booths which ruined the intimacy of the event. They did not state that there was little to no room to hang anything up either. After we made something happen, someone moved some of our balloons because it was conflicting with the atmosphere yet that could’ve been avoided by the establishment. We weren’t even given some sort of grace such as a free shot, but were pressured to be exactly sure of our party number when it didn’t even matter since everything was all screwed up. Funny enough, we were told if less than the number we gave showed up we would be charged per person. For such poor customer service? Will not be returning. Couldn’t use the patio either as there were so many people. Was also told we could send in a playlist for our party but it must be sent a week prior meanwhile we booked about 2-3 weeks in advance but was never advised. They even closed early despite the place being full, most likely from the stress of having THREE whole parties (an additional showed up after the first & us) beware. There is always a catch. Can’t expect good...
