My family and I spent 4 days in NYC over Thanksgiving break, our first real trip into the city. We opted to stay at the brand new Graduate Hotel on Roosevelt Island and take the train into the city during the day. After our first day in the city, we were cold, exhausted and had trouble finding a spot to eat, so we took the F train back to the island and found Granny Annie's just steps away from the station.
The restaurant is cozy, uncrowded (maybe because Cornell was on break?), and inviting. I had the potato and leek soup, which was delicious and hearty for a cold night, and a burger that was perfectly cooked. My son had the southern fried chicken sandwich, which he said was "just spicy enough" and came with a huge platter of fries and cole slaw. My husband had the chicken pot pie, which he described as tasty and "a good choice for a night like this."
I noticed some other reviews mentioned the service as being lacking - honestly, the service didn't make a huge impression on me either way, positively or negatively. Like every restaurant in NYC, they asked us for proof of vaccine/COVID status before seating us, which I personally find reassuring. Considering it was late on black Friday at a restaurant that is likely understaffed like most, I imagine the staff was as tired as we were at that point.
Someone else here mentioned drink prices - I had a Southern Tier Pumpking Ale that cost $13.00, about the same as a 4-pack in the liquor store. It's a lot, but I don't drink much in a restaurant so I am willing to pay more for something I enjoy---and honestly, being from New Jersey and accustomed to paying $15 for a beer at Phillies games, I didn't flinch. Our entire bill for 3 people came to just under $80, which was pretty much in line with casual restaurants near home for us.
I don't know that I'll ever be back in the neighborhood, but I would definitely pay a return visit to Granny...
Read moreNever again. Would not recommend. Food is blah and service staff lacks warmth and friendliness. Our waitress was decent and helpful nothing beyond that . Ordered fish and chips with mushy peas ...overpriced and unseasoned fish.. not even a little salt. The fish was also almost burnt definitely fried in too hot oil. For the $24 I expected a little effort for traditional chips not standard fries with 3 pieces of fries fish and condiments . The decent part was the mushy peas which strangely served in the same condiment container as the ketchup and tartar sauce . They also charged an extra dollar for another peas which was barely about 2 tablespoon . If you're advertising a dish with a name don't serve a part of the dish as a condiment. That's just damn cheap . The kids meal chicken strips were so stiff and rubbery and the lemonade was like extra sour lemon almost bitter and undrinkable..they cleared the table and we were left sitting waiting for the wait person to come give my child the scoop of ice cream that came with the meal but no one came .We ended up having to go inside and pay at the entrance. We ate because we were already there and starving and it was also the closest thing to the train.
Ps * give your outdoor clients clean napkins , plates and drinking when they sit down . The dust from the street and plant area was all over the plates and paper napkins and the acrylic cups were dusty with visible finger prints. Also don't have your staff sweep near your patrons while are eating . Extremely gross...we paid and tipped nicely..but,...
Read moreI recently tried to visit this restaurant for a second time, excited to share the experience with my partner. When we arrived, it appeared to be karaoke night, and the noise level was quite high. I was still deciding whether to sit inside or stay outside, discussing this with my partner. I pointed to a table and said, 'Let’s grab that table over there.' At that moment, the hostess approached us at the entry and, without seating us, said, ‘'Well, if you’re going to show up unannounced, you might as well just seat yourself.' She grabbed the menu aggressively and slammed it on the table. Mind you, my partner and I were still standing by the door. Her tone was aggressive, unwelcoming, and disrespectful. Also, note that this hostess is a Latina from Colombia.
I was taken aback by her attitude, which seemed unnecessarily hostile. This interaction, unfortunately, led me to decide not to spend my money here, as I expect a certain level of professionalism and respect when dining out. Her behavior made me feel unwelcome, and as a result, I won’t be returning to this establishment. I encourage management to address this hostess's customer service approach to ensure guests feel comfortable and...
