Update: this has become my go to favorite spot in the morning mostly thanks to great staff and customers. I go here every morning for about half an hour for my morning cup of coffee and to chat with the super friendly and interesting baristas and now customers as well who I've gotten to know so I've got a nice little cafe Community going here. So it feels very homey and nice. That said everything I put down in my earlier review is still true. It is not a place where you're going to feel welcome to sit with your laptop for four hours. Also I think there's a different shift of people in the nighttime and so their personality and the vibe of the cafe is a little bit different then. When I did my first review it was in the late afternoon early evening and I really felt like I was being policed and not made welcome. I do not feel that at all in the morning in fact this is such a friendly group of staff that it's great. But you'll have to recognize that if you want an office substitute you'll probably have to go elsewhere. The review from another person--Hllary below-- exemplifies the very extreme lengths to which they go to ensure no laptops. Not an ounce of flexibility and deep hostility. They aren't kidding and zero tolerance. Now that I have stopped expecting to do any work here I enjoy it more. I go elsewhere (cocoa bar) for laptop time Old review: Coffee is excellent food is pretty good and and service is good. But they are kind of anti-comfortable in their attitudes and policies. The electric outlets are hidden and laptops are allowed only at certain tablas. They are serious about their rules and will enforce. Which makes customers feel like they are in elementary school instead of adults in the world. This is a turnoff. I know electricity costs money but they are among the more expensive coffee shops and they have a lot of pass through takeout traffic unlike more user friendly coffee shops I've been to who manage to welcome workers despite much lower volume. I'd almost prefer to be charged for the electricity than locked out of outlets like a toddler. How about a surcharge if you use the outlet? I dunno its just a...
Read moreI went here on a night while I was working in the area. It was raining out so I decided that I would go inside to duck out of the rain. I bought a café au lait and sat for maybe 20 minutes before using the restroom, then headed back outside to get to work. I did not realize that I forgot my wallet until I got back to the office that night. Now, to make a long story not as long, I will not return to the Hungry Ghost because somebody in this establishment stole the metrocard from my wallet that just so happened to have a weeks worth of subway fare on it, and considering I work paycheck to paycheck, now I'm taking the hit. I reluctantly decided to put that much money on that card because I didnt want to have to worry about how I was getting to and from work for the week, and considering that money could have been for food, I now have to worry about that and how I'm going to feed myself. So, to whomever stole my metrocard for subway fare, I'm sorry for whatever struggle you're going through that gave you the idea that it was ok to take from me, and just know that you're not alone, but to sum up a long and drawn-out story, you stole from the...
Read moreWhen you find yourself near the Barclay Center, near the Bergen Street subway stop, or simply in the vicinity of 6th Avenue and Flatbush, AND in need of a coffee-fueled respite (or other beverages), this Hungry Ghost Coffee Bar & Café is, simply put, YOUR place. Not only do they serve Stumptown coffee, which is on my list of my top ten coffee roasters, they also serve delightful pastries, sandwiches and bite-sized treats. The interior of this café is painted in shades of to-die-for warm slate grey with warm accents of lighting, matched with absolutely stunning wooden chairs, tables, and shelving. At some tables, laptop use is restricted, which is, again, a sheer delight to the café patrons (like me), who love to sit, talk, and enjoy their coffee breaks in traditional style. But to all laptop users, there is ample laptop seating space at the long bar table, and to my guess, the WiFi must be top notch. And lastly, the barista is a master in latte & cappuchino foamed milk art. Ask her to make you one, and you’ll be...
