Let's just start off by saying that we're total suckers for BKLYN Larder. They have perhaps the best curated selection of our favourite things (cheese, chocolate, craft brews, etc.) that we've yet to see on store shelves. They prepare everything with a wonderfully lax precision, seem to have chillness written into the job description, and as a bonus are super cute.
But as much as we may love them, they're not without their shortcomings. BKLYN Larder is the kind of place where we'd like to relax and just eat and buy whatever we felt like, but they ultimately prioritize fanciness over production standards, and as such we have to stop ourselves from devouring the place whole, delicious as it may be, in order to preserve our ethical standing on issues such as animal welfare and sustainability.
Though we've enjoyed grass-fed meatballs, raw milk cheeses made from pastured dairy, organic and unpasteurized ciders and beers, etc. at the Larder, when it comes down to it: it's a gourmand's shop. Taste reigns king here, and luckily for us, good sourcing and production standards often happen (no surprise) to overlap with superlative taste. To their credit, the staff is pretty knowledgable and their labeling is clear enough that it's fairly easy to avoid accidentally purchasing things we'd rather not support, but at a place we'd like to support wholeheartedly, we're sad that we have to hold ourselves back at all.
P.S. If you're coming here and you're in a rush, know that we've never been here without a crowd. It's a hoppin' spot, so plan...
Read moreI was very excited to try this place and their focaccia. I was disappointed by their treatment of allergens and my soggy sandwich. Food: I am vegetarian and want protein so I ordered the tofu pesto focaccia. I added cheese. When I got home 15 minutes later, the tofu had soaked the lovely focaccia. I spent $18 on a soggy sandwich ($3 added cheese since I didn’t get the pesto). Tofu should have been pressed so it didn’t press its water onto my bread. Service: I asked what nuts are in the pesto, (allergic to cashews and pistachios which are sometimes used). The kitchen wasn’t sure. Odd? Kitchen should know common allergens. I am fine to switch for onion jam, but it’s the principle of respecting allergens. Atmosphere: The ladies at the counter were very nice. There was a wonderful selection of items for purchase. I was so looking forward to getting sandwiches or bread and cheese from here on my way to the park. I wish it didn’t have such a...
Read moreI had a trial as a line cook here on October 6th, 2023. I had made a mistake of reading 1.5lbs as grams, which was a stupid mistake, I know. My nerves were shooting through and I had so many anxious thoughts racing through my mind. Nonetheless, the staff was really helpful, patient, and understanding, which made me feel more comfortable in the kitchen.
My only complaint is something that has been recurring a ton recently from recruiters: ghosting. While I didn't anticipate getting the job after my mistake, I believe that receiving a response with constructive feedback, even if it's a rejection, would be a more professional and respectful approach.
Nevertheless, I've since found employment elsewhere, and I'm grateful for the valuable experience I gained during my trial at this establishment. It has highlighted areas where I can improve, particularly my confidence and...
