A Hidden Gem in Flushing – Tonkotsu Ramen That Transports You to Japan
I rarely leave reviews, but Izakaya Nana absolutely deserves the praise. I stopped in for lunch with 3 friends and ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen with a glass of water—and left completely blown away by the quality, flavor, and attention to detail.
The Ramen: The Tonkotsu broth was phenomenal—rich, creamy, and layered with depth. It had that perfect opaque, milky consistency that comes from hours of simmering pork bones. You could taste the umami in every spoonful—savory but not overly salty, with a subtle sweetness and buttery finish. The pork chashu was melt-in-your-mouth tender, slightly charred at the edges with just enough fat to add richness without overpowering the bowl.
The noodles were fresh, with just the right chew—a little firm in the center, soaking up the broth beautifully. They didn’t get soggy even as I took my time savoring the bowl. The soft-boiled egg was expertly marinated, with a custardy yolk that oozed flavor. The toppings—crisp green onions, and a delicate sheet of nori—were thoughtfully portioned and balanced out the dish.
The Water: Even the glass of water impressed me. Ice cold, served promptly in a spotless glass. It’s a small detail, but when you’re eating rich ramen, clean and refreshing water makes a big difference. It was continuously refilled without me asking, which speaks volumes about the attentiveness of the staff.
The Atmosphere: The interior of Izakaya Nana is intimate and inviting, with low lighting, wooden paneling, and Japanese decor that creates a cozy izakaya vibe without feeling kitschy. The open kitchen adds energy to the space—you can actually hear the broth bubbling and see the chefs at work, which makes the experience feel personal and authentic.
Service: Service was quick, polite, and warm. The staff greeted me with enthusiasm, made sure I was comfortable, and checked in once during the meal—just enough to feel cared for without being intrusive.
Final Thoughts: Izakaya Nana is a must-visit if you’re in Flushing and even remotely into ramen. It’s clear that they respect the craft—from their ingredients to presentation to service. The Tonkotsu Ramen easily rivals what I’ve had in Tokyo, and that’s not an exaggeration. Whether you’re a ramen purist or just curious, this place delivers...
Read moreSaw this place on TikTok because we wanted to eat at a nice restaurant so I booked a reservation with a couple friends for a birthday. The minute we walked in we were taken aback at how beautiful everything is. The atmosphere is great and a lot of time, money, and detail was put into the look of the place which my friends and I all loved. The service was rlly fast, helpful, and really nice. First glance at the menu and everything looked rlly delicious and appetizing to order. My friends and I ordered an assortment of dishes to share and eat together so it all looked exactly as pictured which was great. However, the minute we tried all of our dishes it just wasn’t good at all. I think a lot of thought was put into the food for detail to look good but the taste just wasn’t good at all considering that the prices were really expensive. The only thing that we liked out of all the dishes we had was the appetizer which were the skewers. We ordered the Tornado Omelette Rice, Sushi Dragon Balls, the Katsu Don, and for dessert the matcha crepe cake. All 4 dishes were just awful. We took 3 bites and basically tried to force ourselves to eat the rest because we had spent a lot of money on those dishes plus the dessert. We decided to leave our food there and took one box of food back in a box to go which in all honesty I don’t know why, considering we didn’t even eat it when we brought it home. We all left really hungry and extremely disappointed in the taste of the food. I’d honestly just say if you want aesthetically pleasing photos or videos definitely go there. As far as the food … definitely not. If you do happen to get the food from there I highly recommend the Yakitori platter which is the one appetizer that we had gotten to start off before the dishes. That was genuinely the one and only good tasting food that we actually devoured and enjoyed out of the entirety of time and money spent on all our other dishes and the...
Read moreThis restaurant looks so amazing with very intricate Japanese decor all throughout! The ambiance is incredibly warm and welcoming, with many staff members catering to all the customers here. However, despite the staff being friendly and the service was quick, (except our ramen which took half an hour...) they also seemed chaotic and disorganized, where they often brought in food that's meant for other diners. They also spoiled our birthday cake surprise by asking the entire room (including the birthday boy), if they're ready for the cake...
We were situated all the way at the back room, which according to the staff members was why the central air was so weak, leaving us feeling very warm and uncomfortable unfortunately. The yakitori platter was decent, but was leaning towards the blander side due to the small amount of condiment that coated it, which is a very easy fix! The unagi don was delicious and paired perfectly with the sweet Tamago. The sashimi platter was also incredibly fresh! The fried dishes were a bit plain and could definitely benefit from having some condiment on the side. My personal favorite was definitely the lobster potato salad balls and the ebi tempura, which was fried to perfection with a light and tasty crunch!
Overall this restaurant has a lot of potential and since they opened not too long ago, I'm sure they're still working through some kinks (I.e., the karaoke machine in the rooms doesn't work, certain rooms are warmer than others, some menu items were out of stock like the chicken skin, the butter corn, etcetera). Would consider coming back to try their other menu items one day. Wishing them the best and I hope the next time we come back we can give them the better rating I know they can achieve.
