A fish market shouldn't smell like "fish" rather like the sea. This is a bad sign as to cleanliness when you have a strong stench of decomposing fish proteins. Pass this store after closing and take a whiff for yourself. That smell is called amines. The fish themselves are overly iced so as to add water weight therefore increasing its price. A fish store should be cold to ensure freshness if not then a freshly caught fish shouldn't be brought out of the freezer and then refrozen no more than a certain number. Remember once caught fish are decomposing and time is short. Many of the fish especially the ones broken down have a hint of ammonia which could be a significant sign of the product being cleaned to mask its amine scent due to refreezing lack of sell. No information where the fish is sourced which is important to determine health risks. I don't feel this store is worth it and would definitely go elsewhere.

Read moreThis place is hit or miss. I've been here times and the fish is fresh and the prices are always right. Today was another story. Things smelled off before we even walked thru the front door. Went against my better judgement and bought a couple of pounds of shrimp and corvina. Had to throw 10 of the shrimps out because they were bad. The corvina which looked alright in the store after washing it before prepping for ceviche it also appears to have been out way too long. This spot is great for people who live in the neighborhood or if your passing thru on the lirr you can stop in. If everything smells good you'll be fine, if you feel like something is off come back another day, the same goes for the other fish spot on the corner next to this one. I wouldn't go out of my way to...
Read moreBeen going for many years, yesterday I purchased 1 1/2 of wild shrimp and about 3lbs of whole whiting I hand picked and had fileted. Came home and went to clean the shrimp which I rinsed but still had a slight smell and the shrimp turned to mush in my hand, I tried 3 more and the same thing. No good. I then rinse, season 4 pcs. of whiting, comes out nice. I go to bite in and the AMMONIA aroma filled my mouth and my nose. REALLY? Now it's late, I don't have a receipt and I got sold old shrimp and whiting that has been rinsed in an AMMONIA bath!!! Years I've catered to this establishment....
