Of all the pizza spots I’ve been to in NYC, La Rose was incredibly underwhelming relative to my own expectations. I tried ordering several times when you could only order over IG, but could never get my order in on time. Owner was kind enough to let me bypass the pre-order one month but I had to cancel last minute.
Fast forward a few months later and I was excited to try La Rose out when I heard there was finally going to be a physical space. When I finally ordered this past weekend, I was shocked that 2 pies (effectively 8 slices, 4 slices per pie came out to $100 after tips and delivery fees). I presume the price would have been closer to $80+ if I didn’t do delivery. That alone would have been pretty expensive. Regardless, I had high expectations and the pizza was honestly meh at best. I felt robbed. It was incredibly underwhelming. I ordered the Rosario and Lucia. There was no spice from the Calabrian chili honey. The pies are tiny and the dough tasted stale. Maybe it was underwhelming bc I got it delivered, which I should have known better not to do.
If you want a good Detroit slice, go to Ace’s in Williamsburg. Emmy squared used to be good, but has gone down hill in recent years. I might give this place a try again in person, but I honestly felt cheated relative to what I got.
EDIT: Hi, Andrew. Thank you for the reply. Happy to take you up on your offer for the refund. I’m sure I would have a better experience in person and would be happy to try...
Read moreI grew up in Michigan and had never heard of “Detroit-style pizza” until it became a thing here in NYC. Domino’s and Little Caesar’s are both based in southeast Michigan so I would have maybe thought that was our pizza?
Soooo happy to have learned about this rich, thick, crispy pizza, especially from La Rose.
The toppings and sauce are delicious and in just the right proportion. The combinations are unique, like vodka sauce and olives.
You have to order on Slice, which always seems to estimate a longer delivery time than happens. But I would rather they over estimate than leave us sitting there watching the clock. Even on Friday night, delivery has been faster than estimated.
The first time we ordered, I added on a side of ranch for dipping our crusts. THIS I definitely knew from Michigan childhood. When our order arrived, there was no ranch. No big deal, the pizza was delicious, but I notified them because I paid for it. Andrew refunded our whole order! So above and beyond. It showed us the kind of integrity he has with his business.
This pizza ain’t cheap. We spent about $100 for four of us to eat last night. But...
Read moreTo begin, this is the perfect place to go if you’re looking to venture out of your comfort zone of New York style pizza. Each slice is made with love and is bursting with flavor but comforting. It’s also nice to watch your pizza be made in front of you. I feel like this is the kind of place where you can sit down and eat a slice in complete silence and feel like you’re sitting in your dining room with no obligation to speak or think about anything but your pizza. And I love that. It’s not always easy to find that comfort. So, if you’re visiting the area or a resident, stop by, try a slice or two, and smile. Make sure to thank the owner, he puts a lot of love and thought into his pizza if...
