I think it's places like this that give New York Mexican a bad name. Where to start?
It's important for restaurants to make money. I get that. But it seemed like at every last twist and turn, I was getting gouged. The serving of tequila came in a tiny hospital medicine sized shot glass and wasn't full. The tacos were small. Chips and salsa costs four bucks. The gordita was small... On the flip side, at least the margarita and ceviche were decent sized. The corn was undersized.
They also attempt to pack as many people into a very small space. So packed was the restaurant on a random weeknight that I was bumped into about 45 times by the staff. No, I'm not exaggerating. It became almost comical, and was taken to the next level when one of the staff members asked me to move closer into the tiny aisle space. The only person who seemed to get it was someone who seemed like a manager, and was able to move my seat a bit further away from the aisle.
On to the food. Some of it was good, some was not. The guacamole came pre-made. The tacos were very hit or miss. Biggest hit was the shrimp. It was delicious, I could eat it all night. But then the rajas? What was that? Roasted poblano strips sounds awesome, but the final product was more like a side dish. Just because you put something in a tortilla, doesn't make it a taco. The special taco of the day, garlic shrimp or something, was mediocre. The pork, which they heavily tout, needed to simmer longer and wasn't as fall apart juicy as I'd have liked. The lengua in the gordita was also devoid of taste. I'm not sure how you manage this, seeing as lengua is intensely flavorful, but they did. At least the gordita shell was good. The corn was decent.
Much of the crowd seemed to be content at sipping a margarita, lazily taking chips with some guac on them and making chit chat. If this is the scene you want, by all means come here. It was very "Williamsburgy" in that the people were very cool, and dressed fashionably.
But if you're looking for good food, go elsewhere. You will be...
Read moreYeah this place is going to be a no for me dawg (randy Jackson voice) I think one star might be a bit too much, I also wouldn't call it authentic Mexican food. The most authentic thing they have from Mexico is the plastic plates and that's about it. This place is a watered down Mexicali type of food with a huge lack in seasoning at least for me a mexican that grew up in Mexico. -The steak tacos had no flavor at all, not even salt. Literally took beef chopped it up, cooked it and served it in a tortilla without any regard of seasoning. -The pambazo which had a high recommendation was also a HUGE disappointment, the sauce it was dipped in had no flavor at all. The homemade chorizo was flavorless ground beef with a hint of not a pleasant flavor, oh and it had chiles en vinagre? Like que!. Also the owner/chef being from Mexico city you would think the pambazo would be great but it's a huge miss. -The tinga quesadilla was a fried empanada. We got told that it would be served like the fried street quesasillas in Mexico but it didn't even come close. The tinga had no tinga flavor at all. It was just chicken boiled in tomato sauce. -the flautas were served like enchiladas smothered with sauce. I mean they were ok not bad actually. -The fried fish tacos were also 👌 but they do put Valentina on them which over powers the flavor of the fish because of the vinegar maybe thats why we said it was good. -Last the guacamole was the best thing they have going. It had a very good Mexican flavor. I should've just eat guac and dipped but the kids insisted. In all I wouldn't go there for the food. Maybe just...

So tacos are definitely my love language and all tacos are not created equally so I'm kinda picky about where my tacos come from.
I was on a date at nearby Domino Park and looked into this spot. Our server Masha was super sweet, introduced herself , shared a little of her history with the restaurant and made great recommendations. We went with a variety of tacos that included: the fish, garlic shrimp, spicy pulled chicken. While those were being made, we started with the guacamole and chips. I don't know all the ingredients that was in that salsa but Baybee when I tell you that thing had a kick to it. Even the Jamaican in me couldn't fully handle it. It was giving 50 Jamaican hot peppers.
When we did get the tacos, the fish was super fresh and tasteful. The shrimps were all garlicky and succulent and while the chicken wasn't as loved and was super messy ( which I don't like)- everything was good.
Bae had a Modello and I had the guava flavored margarita minus the spice.
We left their on a high. Really great service, amazing food and vibes. I had only one gripe- Idk who was in control of the playlist was but it sounded like a bad American Idol contestant. Besides that, nothing to complain about.
Do keep in mind they are CASH ONLY! They do have a roadside ATM that is $2 if you feel like choosing violence.
When you're done, grab icecrean at Oddfellows down the...
