I purchased 3 cakes in the last week. All red velvet. They were so good. I recently was recommended this place but my coworker. The service gets 4 starts because the second time I purchased a cake, I asked for a cake cutter and the manager was rude. Here’s what happened. I asked for a cake cutter and the lady who helped me said that there was no more before even looking. I told her that someone went upstairs a few days ago when I requested one and grabbed one for me. She came downstairs with one and while she was upstairs,I purchased the cake. She then said I had to pay for it after I already made my purchase of the cake. I was confused by this because previous to this purchase I was given the cake cutter for free after I asked. I was not going to swipe my card again for a $2 cake cutter and the manager got involved and rudely said no that I had to pay. I explained that I bought the cake a few days ago and I wasn’t charged for the cake cutter. Mind you this is a huge cake so I’m not understanding why it’s not customary to provide a cake cutter with the purchase of the cake. Nonetheless I was not happy with how he was talking to me and refuse to give my service to anyone treating me that way. I kindly requested a refund but he ended up giving me the cake cutter and stated that for the future, I would have to pay. That’s understandable but he didn’t have to be rude. I am a medical provider and work long hours. I was coming from work and tired and didn’t appreciate that treatment. Other than that, the cake...
Read moreThis review is about the DUMBO location, which is an "outpost." I've gone in there a few times now, and sampled desserts. Their cookies are amazing! You can taste that they use real butter and they're not overly sweet. I got a takeout tuna sandwich once... it was a little soggy, as any tuna sandwich would be, which is why it's better to build them fresh. Today I bought a strawberry shortcake there for a birthday, which was probably two days older than it should have been, but still tasted very good. It would have been nice to get a fresh one, but honestly it wasn't bad.
I'm confused about what the "outpost" location is supposed to be, though. I see a huge beautiful prep counter, but I don't see anything being prepped. I don't think you can order sandwiches. There are pre-made soups and sandwiches, which look OK. There's chips, beer, a few grocery items. So, is it like a lunch bodega without a lunch sandwich counter, without a grill, with a bakery attached? I'm just confused. Any clues would help...
The sign says they offer catering, but when you ask the guy if they offer catering, he tells you that only their Brooklyn Heights location offers catering. The guy behind the counter is the owner's son, so maybe it's hard to see the place from the point of view of a patron. But I feel like going in there one last time and demanding to know, "What are you? What is this place?"
Its says catering on the sign, so where's the pictures or...
Read moreI’m not happy. I grew up in BK Heights and when I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s L&H was among the best delis in the city, a source of pride even for residents of the neighborhood. In particular, their chicken cutlet sandwich was the stuff of local legend amongst my childhood friends. Well that's all changed. My daughter was craving a chicken sandwich from a fast food type place and I promised her that L&H makes one of the best chicken cutlets in the city and she would not be disappointed. So we just went there and ordered the classic chicken cutlets on a roll. When the counter person handed them to me I thought they felt a little lighter than I remembered. Then when we got home and opened them up, I thought to myself, did I order a chicken cutlet on a roll or a dinner roll? I mean a White Castle hamburger would have been more filling and about 1/5 the price. Also the quality was disgusting. The cutlets were maybe a quarter of an inch thick and hard and stale. My daughter spit her’s out. So much for old school New York. Now L&H has expanded/franchised or whatever. Maybe they are having trouble covering costs because they are skimping on the goods. Next time I’ll just let my daughter go to McDonalds where I know they will at least have a...
