stopped at Mama's Too, one of NYC's pizza meccas for lunch. this tiny pizzeria has sidewalk seating only. the interior is an order counter plus the kitchen and ovens. the square pies are on display. and the round "house" pie seems to be served only when it comes out of the oven fresh. while the variety of square slices are very good, come and stay for the "house slice" (round pie) which is essentially a cheese slice sprinkled with freshly grated Parmesan and fresh basil. the "house" round pies are served fresh out of the oven. i had to wait about ten or so minutes for a round "house" pie to be ready. and man, it was worth the wait. "house" slice is $4 + tip. the "house" slice is thin-crust NYC style. the crust has a crispy yet chewy bite. it has an airy crust with just enough chew. the slice has good amount of flop. the saucing of the slices is on the heavier side, but it works with the light crisp crumb of the crust. the mozzarella + grated Parmesan make for a tasty combo with the salty sweetness of the sauce and the crunch of the crust. the fresh basil adds that small touch of smell and taste that take the house slices to another level. again, wait for a fresh pie of "house slices" or just order a whole "house" pie--this slice does not disappoint. the staff are efficient as they have to deal with rushes of hungry pizza-o-philes and long lines of hangry masses at different points of the day or night. not sure if there is a way to beat the lines or waits, other than ordering for pickup via food apps.

To set expectations, this isn’t fast food or a place where you get a quick slice to-go. Unless you come during an off time, expect to wait a while. The line moves slowly, and they are not in a hurry to get you your food. This place is inefficiently run. The biggest bottle neck is with the ordering process. If the person taking orders was only responsible for taking orders and not taking orders and putting them in the oven, the line would move a lot faster. If there are 20 people in line, expect to wait at least 20 minutes to order. They have people standing around in the back and yet the person taking orders is doing half the work. When you finally get to the front of the line, if they’re out of the pizza you want but more is on the way, they won’t let you place an order in advance. They’ll tell you to get in the back of that crazy line you just waited in. If you want a slice of pepperoni and more is coming in the next 5 minutes, they should just let you order that slice of pepperoni instead of making you get back in line. Because if they put out a fresh pepperoni pizza, there’s no guarantee it’s still going to be there when you get to the front of the line again. The ordering process took 20 minutes, and then they put the pizza back in the oven, and that took at least another 10 minutes. I ordered a slice of the House Pie & a slice of the Pepperoni. Both were good. I especially liked the Pepperoni, but I wouldn’t say the pizza was life changing. Definitely not worth waiting in line for it again.

Fancy pizza? If it doesn’t offer a beef patty- it’s either a $1 spot or a fancy one. Reasons why it’s annoying here: •The lines. Not worth it. •The ordering process- one at a time inside. •You can’t choose toppings, the menu is preset and it’s their world not yours, Miss Squirrel. •No indoor- only outdoor shack, no heat. •Ordering a pie is via online, only. The process is easy, they’ll tell you it’s gonna be an hour but they always finish early. That’s what she said. Reasons its worth it: •they are efficient, you’ll get it faster than you’d think •all their slices are above average •the squares are not dense and heavy, it’s lighter with excellent crunch •round also has good crunch crust and thin Pass on the Angry Nona, if you’re salt sensitive. The Soppreseta is very salty and it covers a lot of territory on the slice. The slices are above average, overall. On a Portnoy scale: they’re a 7.7 Sal & Carmines down the street is a 7.2 Marinara even further down is the best in the hood at 8.1 I only ever stop in when there’s no more than 2 to 3 people in line. Waiting for 10-15 minutes in line and another 5 or so for your # to be called isn’t worth it for me, especially when you’re in a hurry & there’s options. That said, preordering pies for a night in, is the move. But with that comes the $$$, you’re going to spend over $30 or $40 for a pie. It’ll feed 2-4 though, depending on the beasts you’re trying to feed. Destination: no Portion to price: 2/5 House slice: 3.5/5 Upside down: 3.5/5

Decent, but overrated pizza. Not worth making a trip unless you have the time to wait on line and the staff is rude as hell. FOOD: Serves a variety of square slices and *occasionally* sandwiches (FYI: these are only made on 2 random week days at specific locations). I ordered an Angry Nonna, a pepperoni, a poached pear, and a vodka slice. All were decent and crispy, but honestly - nothing special. If you want a GREAT slice in Manhattan try Prince Street Pizza or Joe’s Pizza instead! SERVICE: This spot was run by a bunch of teens who showed that they could care less about being there. Normally I don’t care too much about that, but it was blatant “idgaf” culture there. Cashier was mostly on her phone while facing customers, rude when asked any questions about the slices and busy joking around with her co workers the whole time. AMBIANCE: This spot is designed sort of like a pop-up/ pick up and go kind of spot. You will have to wait on a long 15 min+ line before ordering, then wait another 10-15 after for your food. There are 2 benches you can sit at outside, but they fill up quickly. No inside dining option as a heads up. OVERALL: Go early during the day in the week to try if you’re really curious, but this pizza chain seems like one that mostly relies on influencers to advertise and make them trend/build hype. Slices are nice and flavorful but definitely not worth the hype.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED... if there were a Michelin star guide to pizza, Mama's too would deserve the highest possible rating. In a city where there is a pizza joint every couple of blocks, Mama's Too stands out. Pizza is a very personal thing for New Yorkers. If you've lived here long enough, you have your favorite and it is rare for a favorite to be to be displaced. I've lived here for over 25 years and the house slice, or house square became my favorite at first bite. And while it might not become yours, if you love pizza, you must visit this place. Things to know. You cannot order a custom piece of pie, whatever is in the showcase is what is available You cannot order a whole pie (there is talk that whole pies might be available in the near future) Don't call the square slices "Sicilian", they are referred to as squares. (triangles are "slices"). Squares are $4.50 and slices are $3.50 ($10.00 credit card minimum) Don't let the simplicity of the house slice or square fool you... It is the best thing they have imho. Don't even think about trying to order garlic knots, they don't have them. It's pizza and only pizza. The place has become pretty crowded since Pete Wells NYT review came out on it, but not unbearably so. In the pictures... House slice, pepperoni square and cacio e pepe square.
