I want to like this place, I really do. The bagels are decent, as is the coffee. The staff is even friendly enough. However, I consistently have problems here. More recently, I ordered to-go and they gave my order to someone else- no big deal. Except that someone else opened the bagel- poked at it then returned it. “I don’t think this is our order”. At which point the clerk realized his error and announced my order, giving me opened, poked-at bagels. Today, I tried to streamline the process by ordering online for pick-up. Only to walk home, (I don’t live close) realize they made the wrong bagel twice over. I ordered three bagels; two were wrong. We didn’t make a complicated order. In fact, two of the bagels were right off the menu, the third being a bagel with cream cheese. After calling for ten minutes straight, I hung up and reluctantly ate a bagel I didn’t order. I guess if you don’t answer the phone you presume you’re unaccountable for wrong orders. Maybe I should have opened all of the bagels and checked them, but space it limited and it wasn’t slow. Furthermore, I want to trust that a simple order (as was mine) can be acted upon correctly. In New York a bagel place is only as valuable as their ordering system. Having a clear, working order-to-receive process will make or break a bagel place...

I just moved back to Bed-Stuy and was super stoked to try this place. My husband gave me his order but I was undecided and was so excited to see all the options on the wall. That excitement was instantly wiped out by the cashiers persistent “Anything else...Anything else...ANYTHING ELSE” not even allowing me to breathe between each item of my order. Yet he had a completely different tune with the girl behind me. Not sure what I did besides not rattling off my order like a machine.
Living literally around the corner from this place, I saw this becoming my regular spot. But my experience today has made me second guess that. I don’t want to be pressured each time I order something, especially on a Sunday morning. Maybe this place doesn’t need new customers, kudos for being busy enough during a pandemic to be able to be rude to customers. Or well, at least new customers who need a couple seconds to compose their order.
At least the bagels were good! Hence the 4 stars, would’ve been a 5.
I was there on Sunday 10/25...

Me looking at the menu: I’d like some jalapeño cheddar bagels. Polite employee: we don’t make those anymore. Me: okay I’ll take a pumpernickel bagel. Them: sorry we’re sold out. Me: what are those? Them: Everything pumpernickel. Me: okay I’ll have that with the lox and chive cream cheese Them: we don’t make that anymore. Me: okay I’ll have one of those with a BLT Them: we are out of lettuce Me: okay a BAT Them: we are out of avocado
After figuring out what was available I waited 15 minutes for a bagel.
40 years of ordering bagels in NYC and never in my life have I had an experience as ridiculous as this one. Then I get my bagel and it’s a tiny half size bagel. Reduce your prices by 50%, stock your kitchen properly, buy a second toaster, and reduce the volume of online ordering you accept because it completely diminishes the only positive thing going for this place: the nice vibe your employees have. Smiling while they sadly inform people they don’t have anything available on a Saturday...
