Annoyed by Rocco's!
I'm a life-long area resident. But the quality is going downhill especially in terms of service as opposed to pasteries. The prices on bill didn't match menu. The didn't regular drip coffee and so "only" could get us the more expensive kinds. The old timer who used to always be here (Frankie) is gone and the family is no where to be found. Running a bit on reputation and sadly no family to supervise the chaos and show. People leave and the dishes remain on the tables in the back. Our waiter is literally screaming and is not polite. No paper towels in the bathroom. The lock on the door is all broken looking. The heat in the back is off. It's cold, loud, and uncomfortable. Crazy place. I'm going with 1 stars for the sit down service and 4 stars for the food itself. The didn't have brewed coffee on the menu so we had to have Americano at extra cost. Really, so many demerits.
Veniero's on East 11th street in the Lower East Side is also good and is a bit cheaper. The area around Roccos is a bit nicer for extended walks. Roccos is right on Bleecker which has its share of restaurants, bars, and a fun scene. There are plenty of coffee places near by if you need that and a snack. At this point Veniero's is more authentic and there is always a family member around.
Tip 1: you can buy something at Rocco's to go and sit outside in the small park 1/2 block away with the water fountain (diagonal from the church which my grandparents were married in). It's not a fancy or large park but it's entertaining to watch the people and the ridiculous pigeons.
Tip 2: If you want to sit at the bakery, it is ONLY waiter service, which can be downright inattentive. Chaos in fact. Loud. No attention. Rude. To be honest, we had such bad service by Xavier and this latest guy that we can't believe it. Major negative. New guy now is so unhappy he says it to people. It took forever to take our order, much longer to bring it, and there was no interest in our table or if we needed anything. I feel bad about mentioning this but honestly, it was really disappointing and left a very bad impression. This has happened many many times. The service is horrible. Our waiter was complaining and it was horrible. No water on the table. Just what we paid for. Crazy place. I'm going with a star for the sit down service and 4 stars for the food itself. But overall, the place is chaos if you...
Read moreAgain and again, and again. That how I can describe my experience with Rocco's. I was twice in Bayridge. Yesterday I finally attended Bleecker. And tomorrow I'll come back there. Again:) Bleecker location is definitely must-go place. Cause they have everything there, this is main spot, I guess. Only small part of sweets in Bayridge. Italian cheesecake and Profitroll cake are gorgeous. First one is from ricotta cheese, what makes it quite differ from his regular American style brothers, and Profitroll filled with tender cream filling (not butter) covered with finest chocolate. Main thing is that all their sweets are not execcively sweet (I reviewed pekan, oreo and pistachio cheesecakes for second location also). I would say they are mild, pleasantly sweet and don't leave you with sticky, sugary feeling. And those cookies!!! Guys. Huge and magical. I believe tomorrow I'll stand at least half an hour near the window before I finally can choose between all those wonderful desserts. And...yes,again! I will not stop on only one thing. If you still think, don't, just get up and run to Rocco's! I bet you'll meet me there:) My heart belongs to that place. 08/05/2016: raspberrie pie with french cream filling-yummy thing! Sweeter them others, but yummy yummy! Thin pie crust covered with raspberry jam and chocolate, thick layer of white and light tender french cream, with chocolate and raspberries on top, that give freshness to this dessert. And tiramisu in a cup. That was not best for me,sorry guys. Will not repeat it. But believe tiramisu cake should be different. MUST TRY: ITALIAN CHEESECAKE, LOBSTER TALE, ANY OF...
Read moreWay down hill on Tuesday night. On a busy Tuesday night not having much time before the theater and avoiding other crowded places we walked in into this famed pastry shop. Have been coming here on occassion for over 30 years and what a decline. The place looks dingy and empty and although desserts looked scrumptions we could not get them. Ordering directly was not an option. We were told if we plan to drink our coffee sitting down then we should get a table. An easy task in an empty place. After a wait I went back to ask for help and menu was finally brought in but no order taken. Then a a family walked in and sat in front of the display and they were served immediately. While two of us, and another big family of five adults (toruists) were waiting and waiting in the back. I went back to the counter and asked to cut my cake so we would not have wait for much longer but the waiters never came although I could see them scuttling around. We had to walk out and get an ice...
