I remember a long time ago, maybe in 2008, this was a pleasant, warm place to go for a wide variety of meals prepared any time your heart desired.
Recently I ordered a "Grilled Vegetable Wrap". What arrived was not grilled, in fact it appears the smallish tortilla style flat bread was stuffed with diced, frozen vegetables and then microwaved until soggy and tepid. I was imagining something made to be hot , charred and cooked to the point that the fresh ingredients could be pressed to fit within the confines of a moist, fresh flour wrap.
It all would have been ok if wasn't for the sideways remarks of the waitress who yelled to the other diners that their vegetables sometimes "smelled like fish". I can't say I have ever experienced vegetables smelling of finned cuisine but the though of it was not appetizing. I looked up later that there was an item in the Wall Street Journal in regards to a species of endangered fish occupying lengths of canals that feed the Los Angeles water supply. Trump had asked that LA turn on the "spigot" to put out the flames in the Palisades. Perhaps it was a shot across the EPA's bow.
I needed to used the restroom and stood to discover the not so busy kitchen ha been left to fall into a state of disrepair. The bathrooms were the size of a phone booth and so tight that the leg of my pants rubbed against the not-recently-cleaned toilet upon opening the door.
The decision seems to have been made to pay homage to the Carter administration by turning the heat down to a point where I could not take off my winter jacket. It was so cold that the diners near the window were finding their food chilled to a point where pancakes stuck to plates amidst a congealed mass of gelatinous pancake syrup.
The place is clearly not doing as well as it had and ownership seems to have little interest in improving or altering the menu to attract or retain customers.
Fond memories but I am afraid this diner's fate may be...
Read moreOk so short version. All the staff are super nice, our food was prepared well, and the establishment was comfortable and clean.
Details:
Our flight git canceled and rescheduled for hours later and it was LATE. After some research found this diner and called. (Yes, I called and after 3 calls to other places with no answer they answered and verified they are open 24/7) we arrived a little after 1 and it was a couple small groups inside so we sat quickly. Menu is enormous so I was back and forth with what to order but the guy was EXTREMELY patient. I hate taking up a waiter/waitress' time but he reassured me not to rush and it was fine.
I ordered the salami and provolone omelet that cane with grits and toast and got a side of sweet potato fries and my daughter got the Mediterranean wrap that came with fries. I really didn’t need to add anything to my omelet it was very tasty and so was my daughter's wrap. Her wrap had zucchini and squash and was flavorful so I definitely got a bite of that and we left stuffed. The staff were extremely nice the entire time even the ones who weren't waiting on our table. Shockingly the food came out SUPER fast so I was thankful for that. I would definitely come back if I lived here and make this my midnight snack spot since I'm a night owl. The manager was there when we went until we left hours later and was such a sweet soul. I highly recommend this place...
Read moreThis diner is horrible. They have items on the menu that are not available, so if you order the item from the menu and they do not make it, you will not find out until you receive your order. I ordered Honey dipped fried chicken and they sent me some hard fried chicken and no honey sauce. When I called to explain my order was wrong, the gentlemen that answered said we don't make it even though it's on the menu. I ask can I have a refund and he told me that he just put orders together and he is not the owner, so in other words I need to deal with it. He expressed if I have a problem to call in the morning and talk to the manager. So basically you order from them and they send you what they feel you should eat instead of informing the customer the item is not available. The food is basic, tasteless and prepared horrible. The customer service after midnight is useless. I work overnight so it is hard to find places to eat, and most of the employees at my job order from this place because there is nothing else. I work with well over 150 people that order from here and I will definitely make it my business to tell them not to order from this place anymore. Plus a new store just opened on 70th between York and First Avenue and the food is 10 times better and about 6...
