This one’s gonna be long—for management’s sake. TLDR for potential guests—sweetheart server, lovely ambiance, but the kitchen screwed up a burger 3 times in a row… when the restaurant was over half empty. It was taken off the bill, in addition to a round of drinks being comped, but the series of events was so comically bad, we won’t be returning.
I’ve worked in restaurants for 12+ years and I’ve never felt inclined to write a poor review but our experience here was so odd I feel a responsibility to let someone know. Our sweetheart sever did the absolute best they could to recover from our comically bad experience, but after sending back what we thought was a simple dish for the third time we just had to throw in the towel.
We had even ran into two different friends on our way to this bar who said they had been and it was lovely! So we had rave reviews backing us up and high hopes.
Our reservation was a 6:15 on a Sunday. Maybe 4 other tables were in the establishment when we arrived.
Firstly, We asked to sit outside, which the host seemed irked about and hesitated on, telling us we wouldn’t be able to see the band. That’s fine, it was a lovely day outside and we came to catch up with a friend.
Next, Oysters came out room-temp (despite being on a bed of ice) which was concerning. They tasted fine though so we didn’t complain.
After that, I ordered the classic burger, medium. They first tell me they don’t take a temp for the burger—it comes out medium-ish anyway. okay, no problem. they asked if I wanted Mozzerella or Parmesan cheese with that (two odd choices for burger cheese, but okay, it’s a trendy joint) I order Mozzarella. Burger comes out with no cheese. I tell the server who ran the food (different from our main server) That I had asked for mozzarella. To which they said “I’ll bring you a slice” Odd, since I was hoping for melted cheese on the burger, but I’m trying to put myself in the servers shoes and think maybe they don’t melt the burger cheese here? That’s fine. They come back saying they were out of Mozzarella, which is why the burger came with out it. They asked if I would like Parm instead—sure. They come back saying the parm is grated and melted on top usually, so here’s some sliced manchego instead. Like… thickly sliced, hard cheese board cheese. Lovely cheese! But not at all a substitute for what I was hoping for. I clarify that I was really hoping for cheese melted on the burger, if it’s not too much trouble. We ask for the burger to be re-made completely so it doesn’t get over-cooked while they melt the cheese. This request was either missed or ignored and the original burger was put back on the grill and brought back to me with cheese, but now very well done. We send it back once more asking for a fresh burger with cheese.
The last burger comes out, our server says confidently—with cheese. The burger brought was completely different from the one I had ordered. This one STILL with no cheese, but with a well done egg and sliced beets? We assumed it was the other burger offered on their menu? But we lost the will to ask again after round 3 was still a miss and asked...
Read moreI went to St. Mazie to celebrate a recent engagement with a double couples’ date, and the experience was incredibly disappointing. We had reservations for 5 PM and arrived five minutes early. The hostess was extremely rude, ignored us, and snapped that they weren’t open yet before marching away. We waited inside by the door because it was raining, and it took another five minutes after 5 PM for him to return and seat us.
Within minutes, the place was packed to the brim. While the live jazz music was great, it was impossible to enjoy because the space was overcrowded and unbearably loud. Our waitress matched the hostess’s attitude—rude and completely inattentive.
We ordered a bottle of wine, appetizers, and a couple of entrees. The pita and hummus were lackluster—the hummus was probably the worst I’ve ever had. For mains, I had the parmesan fettuccine and the slow-roasted rib with truffle mash. The pasta was overly salted and peppered to the point of being inedible, and the mash absolutely did not taste like it had truffle in it. I took two bites and left the rest. The waitress never once came to check on us or ask if anything was okay.
St. Mazie seems to prioritize packing people in like sardines over creating a welcoming or enjoyable dining experience. I can’t understand the hype. Between the rude service, subpar food, and overcrowded environment, it was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. Definitely won’t be returning—not for the food, not for the drinks, and certainly not for the service. Overrated...
Read moreBeen going to St. Mazie's for at least 7 years but you're probably losing my business. Never thought I'd give this place a negative review but here it is.
8pm reservation for 2 ppl, my wife's birthday.
Waited over 20 minutes for 2 N/A cocktails. Ordered an appetizer together with the drinks and 2 entrees 5-10 minutes later. The appetizer never came. The entrees came 45 minutes later but the table had no utensils and the waitress was not attentive or professional enough to notice it. We kept trying to make eye contact with her, but she just rushed back and forth without looking. My wife had to get up and ask her for utensils, but we still waited another couple minutes while the food kept getting cold and received no apologies. When she brought the utensils she also mentioned that the appetizer would still take a while (?!). I canceled the appetizer. The entrees (2 risottos) were so spicy that it made me cough quite a bit, and I like and can handle spicy food.
I worked in the restaurant industry for a long time both as a server and manager. This place is too big and was way too busy for only 2 servers, so that's not exactly all servers' fault as they were clearly overwhelmed and stressed out. So was the kitchen.
The problem is that your customers can sense that, and they won't come back on top of not tipping the server too well. Everything felt so rushed and unpleasant, so we finished the food as soon as we could and went to another place as we were still hungry and wanted a better experience for her birthday...
