HAPPY EASTER! This week’s highlight goes to The Four Horsemen! Cozy, precise, friendly, and run by expert staff. I’d been meaning to visit for a while, and now that I’m finally back in NYC, I went on a little hunt for some delicious me-time in the neighborhood.
Best recommendation ever—and now I understand why this place is so hyped.
I wish I could share pictures of my food, but it was just too good to interrupt with any substantial Instagram-millennial moves. You’ll just have to trust me… and go see for yourself.
The place was packed (on a Wednesday, early evening), buzzing with a smooth and gentle energy dynamic without being overwhelming. I was served by Jason, who took the time to walk me through the menu with creative insight and a genuine passion for guiding my little wine adventure. Since I’m already too deep into Italian and French wines, our adventurous verdict landed on an aged natural red wine without sulfites: Al Fons de la Bèstia, from the region of Catalunya, where I spent most of my summers as a child. A discovery blending Sumoll blanc and Garnacha Roja (a red wine that felt both young and aged, fruity and grounded), made by Oriol Artigas.
It smelled like sour red currant and pomegranate by an old river crossing a village built of ancient stone. Moderately low in alcohol, with a gentle fizz that reminded me of the Cava influence from the region. Happily tucking my pretentious French heritage and Italian wine habits away for the night.
And since I’ve always believed that “wine goes with food and food goes with wine,” the quest was far from over. After Jason introduced the food menu and its pairings, my Lilliputian appetite led me to a small dish and a medium one. I didn’t expect to feel so full, but I finished everything, thanks to the vibrant variety and layered flavor of each course. The wine elevated everything feeling both full and light.
So, for anyone who wants to share thoughts on this review, please try: The Carrot Salad. Citrusy, minty, with the perfect crunchy texture. A delightful surprise from tiny dried apricots that balanced the acidity just right. Spiced with something mysterious… I’m still wondering which wizard supplies their chef. Followed by the Butter Beans in Brodo with the rest of Al Fons versatile red wine.
Thank you to the staff for welcoming a solo, curious wine-and-food lover right by the window, where the light fell perfectly through my shiny glass. Can’t wait to return and discover more from your international wine encyclopedia, one sip at a time, savoring the moment at The...
Read moreI was very excited to visit this place just to find out another extremely hyped up, overpriced restaurant. Cozy atmosphere but too many tables amassed (had several times the waiter’s butt in my face as they were trying to serve another table, but ok everybody has to pay bills). Pretentious restaurant with food and service just fine. Anybody with some common sense ,objectivity and a basic culinary education can say that this place is NOT worth any Michlein Stars whatsoever. I just can’t understand who the hell came here and thought let’s gave it a star seriously. It’s just an insult to all those restaurants that are really worth that important achievement (but let’s not dive into the credibility and decay of the Michelin guide system).
gnocco fritto embarassing. Oily aftertaste and the execution was just technically wrong (the dough stayed flat, it didn’t “blow” while frying it, just a heavy flat ball of dough). And where was the speck, it got lost along the way? two paper thin slices and all for 18$?
chilled beef tendon salad was mediocre, I don’t even know why we ordered this
oeuf mayonnaise was interesting, probably the dish I enjoyed the most. The presentation and visual effect are way cooler than how it tastes. Paying the caviar here as it is basically one egg divided in half.
razor clams were ok but too much lime/fish sauce overpowering the dish. Also why not leave the whole clam inside instead of chopping it up? Really wanna save and give less product on a dish that is almost 30$ for just 2 clams?
Winter chicory salad fine nothing impressive, can make it at home with more love
Sweetbread skewers where decent but the mild and creamy flavor was destroyed by the spicy pimenton
the Berkshire sausage with some sauerkraut salad and mustard must be a joke. 40$? Are we at a fake elite version of the Oktober fest lol?
cheesecake good, creamy but very salty and heavy (didn’t sleep for three days hehe). More effort on the desserts would have been appreciated as we are not at the cheesecake factory, the other two options were ice creams…
I bet people work hard here so I don’t like to discredit like this but hey if you wanna act arrogant and grandiose then everything better be perfect and worth it otherwise you gonna get reviewed...
Read moreWent here with my girlfriend on a Saturday night around 10. They sat us immediately, given we didn't have a reservation it was quite a pleasant surprise. The waitstaff was also very kind. And outside of the cabbage, the meal and wine were over priced and frankly, just not that good.
We waited 20 minutes before someone came to give us our wine. I understand it is a busy night, but I could touch both walls at the same time. It's a tiny place. And I saw 3 workers in the bar at one point.
The wine was honestly just bad. I've had organic wine before. This just wasn't good wine. The Riesling and the Pinot were just lacking any unjoyable flavor profile.
The bread and butter was tasty. Great crunch, and warm. The butter was really good too. It was also $8 dollars for 3 small pieces of bread. And another $8 for 5 mussels. This was pretty tasty too. They also served 5 mussels. I'm from New York. I get how expensive things can be. I also get that sometimes you get bent over a barrel.
The oysters were outright gross. Weird texture, kind of felt like if you purposely tried drying the oysters like you would with beef. But then stopped half way to remember you shouldn't do that to fish.
The one bright spot was the cabbage. For all the plates and money we spent, spending time praising the cabbage almost seems like I'm doing a disservice.
The mackerel, bass and clam toast were fine and uninspiring. The clam toast tasted fine, but it was poorly cleaned and had some grit. And all were poorly portioned for their price. Essentially all were mediocre and unmemorable.
Sounds like a lot of people enjoyed this place before me. Unfortunately, I experienced mediocre to bad food (minus the cabbage), awful wine and a terrible wait for pretty much everything.
Don't let Brooklyn LCD fans persuade you to like this place just because they want to. 4.7 stars is just a crime. There is no way this place should be reviewed this highly when you have gems like Aska in the neighborhood. Listen, I've done it too. You like something, you go in with Rose colored glasses bc "ZOMG LCD!". I get it. Unfortunately, I don't get how this many people are getting...
