SUKI DESU has good vibes and the fish is fresh. I had lunch today around noon and I was able to walk in and be seated immediately. I had the $25 entree, and felt like it was a little light on the fish - but that’s not my gripe. They give you hamachi with sesame dressing as an appetizer, and suggest you can add it to your bowl if you’d like. I left about 1/3 of my bowl so I could add the Dashi (broth) to it, and when I gave them my bowl, I received a new bowl with just white rice and broth, and nothing else that I left in it intentionally (fish, sauces, etc). This defeats the entire purpose of leaving parts of your original bowl to be enjoyed with their broth. I was quite disappointed in that experience, and how that was overlooked both by the individual behind the counter and my server. It’s a fun experience, just make sure they don’t throw out your original bowl.

Very good donburis! A lot of fresh fish on rice, very good portion of fish for the price. The hamachi with sauce was very good. We didn’t get the apps but got an extra unagidon to share. Feel like the prices for the apps vs what you get is totally not worth it compared to the donburis. Loved how they give you broth to finish the rice after. I’ve only had that in Japan before, first time I’ve come across this style of eating in NYC. However I thought that the restaurant was wayyy too dim and lacking AC on a hot day. Also the seats were super uncomfortable against a very uneven loose pebbled floor.

My entire party had mild food poisoning after dining here Saturday night. While eating, we noted that the fish tasted fishy — never a good sign, and definitely a far cry from the quality at Tsujihan in Japan (which this restaurant is trying to replicate).

Their service was also subpar, although they were clearly well intentioned. The reservation system was mismanaged (they seat walk-ins immediately once seats are available, without regard to reservations, so there’s often a wait even with a res), the servers were clearly very stressed out and vocalized it, my sashimi was forgotten until I asked for it, and they repeatedly tried to pour the soup that ends the meal too soon. Everyone was very friendly though, and clearly trying their best.

There were people lined up for a while before they were seated, hope they didn’t get food poisoning too after standing for so long. I was very excited for this meal, but I will not be returning to a restaurant that compromises on quality and...

Overall: 4/5

Food: 4/5 - Walked in on a saturday afternoon and got the Fresh from the sea (#3), the unagi bowl and the mixed tartare. The bowls were both pretty good and the fish tasted fresh with no fishy smell.

Service: 5/5 - The server was friendly but nothing out of the ordinary.

Value: 4/5 - The total ended up being around $80. I thought the price was fair but didn't like how the lowest tip suggestion is 20%. This alone I think would make me not want to come back as the food and value were not good enough to warrant going out of the way to have a meal here.

I came here with high expectations after seeing many posts about the restaurant and thought the food was good but nothing extraordinary or worth coming back for. I am glad I tried it out but I don't think I would...
