This is one of my favorite joints for brunch- just to escape the craziness of the city. I've been here 4 times now. I recently bought the $19 Groupon deal which covered a brunch dish plus a glass of sangria for 2. It's a great steal considering their usual prices on the food ($12.95) and sangria ($10) per person. If I had written this after the last time, it would have gotten a stellar 5 stars from me. However, on my most recent visit, I ordered the same gingerbread pancakes. The pancakes were shrunken in size, and were placed on an oval dish instead of the usual large, round one. Also, they were not as fluffy as I had remembered, and they tasted drier than usual. They were not as well executed. I had to wonder if it was because the place was packed this time around- the first few times I went, there were only 2 or 3 tables filled. It's not a big space to begin with; the front area is a store, which sells home goods and accessories. They are only utilizing the back space as a cafe type environment. I'm still giving it a high score for the culmination of my experiences thus far, and to give the benefit of the doubt that the last brunch was a one-time flop. However, I won't be returning until they change their menu; I think I might be...
Read moreExtremely disappointed and feel a bit ripped off. $18.95 for very normal portions of mediocre breakfast. Service that is subpar with staff who doesn’t process what you say to them and doesn’t even provide basics such as water. It seems that all they care about here is getting your money and not even paying tax on it. Payment is cash or venmo only, and tips are cash only. Churro waffle (yes, single large waffle, 3 pieces of bacon for $19) was soggy, not crunchy like a churro should be. Pancake was fluffy but tasted bland like water. Provided, the pancake has whipped cream, a few pieces of banana, a few pieces of strawberry, but still not worth $19. Filipino empanadas came in a set of 3 standard small empanadas (you would expect large ones for the price) were good but not mind blowing. It came with a tiny bit of salad and some standard Thai sweet chili sauce which is actually really disappointing. I expected some homemade green sauce. The vanilla almond tea was very fragrant and $5 for a small pot, was probably the only highlight of the meal. Just these few disappointing dishes cost us $80 cash for breakfast. We couldn’t even score points for it. Sorry, but we won’t be...
Read moreWas looking for a brunch spot in the area and decided to try this place because it has so many 5-star reviews, though after eating here I'm not totally sure why. The food was good but ultimately overpriced in my opinion (the menu and quality seemed very similar to the Pegasus diner a few blocks north, whose base brunch price is $4 less).
The atmosphere also left a lot to be desired, at least in the winter. It was cold enough that I had to wrap myself in my scarf and my hands were freezing by the time I left, and the dining area was oddly dark.
I'll also say that if you're not American you'll probably hate it here if only because you get checked in on a lot. There were like four people working and every one stopped by my table to ask how everything was, and of course my mouth was full every time. It made me wish I had a hat that just says "Everything's great, thanks."
You also have to either tip in cash or via Venmo, which I thought was odd. I know cash is preferred but not everyone always has it on them or uses Venmo.
Admittedly most of these gripes on their own aren't necessarily a big deal but there were just too many of them to make another...
