I came on a Sunday, hoping for no crowd. There was no crowd, which was great.
Food quality/freshness was 9/10.
Selection is not much different than other local sushi places. Other than the toro, there was nothing particularly unusual that I saw for this area.
Service was great from my waitress. I was hoping, though, for more personalized recommendations from Chef Andy, but he was 100% preoccupied by some friends of his who came in to dine while I was there. I would have easily spent another $50-100 on more food, but I got turned off by the disproportionate attention he gave his friends.
As a comparison, I recently ate at Uchi in Austin, TX. They had a much wider selection of fish, a personal sushi chef at the bar, and a more upscale environment. Pricing was pretty much identical.
So, based on my visit, I didn't think it was an excellent value or experience. Great food, though.
Edit to add: Chef Andy did comp my king crab sushi, which was much appreciated.
Edit 06/10/2017: I cannot catch a break at this place. I decided to give it a second chance tonight. The food is still fantastic. Unfortunately, they apparently do not have a liquor license at the moment, which made the meal extremely...
Read moreThe sushi at unagi sushi was amazing. Truly second to none in the capital region. It was obvious that they have gone to great trouble to not only get the highest quality fish available, but the pickled ginger and wasabi were also clearly better than what I'd normally found in a sushi restaurant. The food was stellar.
The prices definitely reflect this effort to serve the best quality ingredients. Food is noticeably more expensive than other area top notch sushi restaurants such as sushi tei or tomo sushi. On top of this, the food also does not come with a soup or salad which is typical of other area restaurants. While that's certainly not a big deal, it helps emphasize the price difference even further.
Despite the obviously high quality ingredients, this is not my new favorite for sushi in the area. The decor of the restaurant feels sparse and cheap, which detracts from a luxury experience. I also found the music very distracting with constant drum machine tracks. If I want a top notch sushi experience I would prefer to go to another restaurant, even though the food is almost certainly better here at unagi. Still a good restaurant that easily makes 4 stars, but...
Read moreMy omakase was worth every penny spent. The staff was friendly and helped us through some of the more exotic options. Up until that point, I'd never had an oyster, but I'm disappointed that I had waited so long to try them. Absolutely outstanding. Everything I had was superb. The fried shrimp heads (which... you can eat the whole thing. Yeah.) were a bit overzealous, but even after trying them, I was impressed and happy with everything I ate.
I can't whole-heartedly give this place a full five stars, only because of the steep price. The quality was outstanding, and I was moderately full come the end of the meal, but after leaving, I felt like I had missed out on something, especially after seeing another table get an order of rolls that looked fantastic. That may just be my stomach talking, though! Regardless, definitely a place I'd like to visit again, and happy to recommend to anyone for a very tasty...
