Ay yo! Lemme break it down for ya about this joint in Troy, NY – Famous Lunch at 111 Congress St. This ain't just your regular hot dog spot, capisce? We talkin' history here. Back in '32, it was called Quick Lunch, but man, did they earn their stripes to be called "World Famous" and lemme tell ya how.
You ever heard of “Operation Hot Dogs”? Picture this: 1958, a young marine from the block, Corporal Gordon Gundrum, stationed way out in Moscow at the U.S. Embassy, was just dyin' for a taste of home. So what did they do? Flew in those Troy hot dogs right to the embassy for the U.S. Ambassador's birthday bash. Crazy, right? That's when Quick Lunch became “World Famous.” Ain't nothin' more New York than makin' headlines for hot dogs!
Fast forward to today, and this place ain't lost its touch. Still servin' up those iconic dogs and shippin' 'em out across the globe. I mean, people all over are straight up fiendin' for a taste of that “Famous Hot Dog.”
Now, lemme tell ya 'bout my visit. I went for the 4 weiners, all decked out in meat sauce and onions. And to wash it down? An RC cola – none of that Coke or Pepsi nonsense. And let me tell ya, it was a tough call, 'cause they got this all-day breakfast that was temptin' as all get out. But for 7 bucks? Man, those dogs were callin' my name!
In the end, if you ever find yourself wanderin' through Troy, you best make a pit stop at Famous Lunch. It's more than just a meal; it's a bite of New York history. And trust me, you won't be...
Read moreI was raised in Troy and used to live around the corner from Famous Lunch. The people and the atmosphere are as great as the food. Now I live in FL but I stop at Famous everytime I'm back. I always get four dogs with the works and fries covered in Zippy sauce. The works is composed of mustard, onions and Zippy sauce. A lot of onions.
It's an experience you need to have when in Troy as it's unique.
This food is not health food at all but it's tasty, cheap, fun and fast. Don't expect anything fancy or green except for the walls. I've been eating these dogs since I was baby and my growth hasn't been stunted. I fed them to my own kids who love them and I got my husband who's from Baltimore hooked on them. The burgers are great too as are the sausage sandwiches. If you can grab a seat at the counter so you're close to the kitchen action and the conversation.
I remember being in Famous around 1994 and this old guy asked me, "How's your lunch?" and I said "Good" through a mouthful of food and he yelled, "No it's not! It's famous lunch not good lunch! Your lunch is famous!" Then he pulled down an old newspaper article to prove it.
If you buy Zippy sauce to go (or have it FedExed as they'll ship anywhere) the secret is to simmer it on your stove top for a couple of hours so its just like what they give you in...
Read moreTotally retro and totally wonderful. This takes me back to the diners of my youth. We came for breakfast and there was the usual selection of eggs, omelettes, pancakes, etc. Everything is cooked on the grill right behind the counter. It’s not fancy by any means your coffee is brought to you by the cup and refills have to be done behind the counter. Even the restaurant equipment is really retro with a milk machine with the lift up handles and a cream dispenser that I haven’t seen in many years. The omelette came with toast and home fries. There is a hotdog omelette on the menu and you would expect nothing less. Companion had a cheese omelette and I had a vegetable and cheese omelette. The vegetables included tomatoes, peppers, and onions sautéed on the grill. The elements were delicious, although greasier than I would like not unexpectedly. You can have any kind of toast you want as long as it is white this is obviously a small family owned business, which makes it even nicer. They appreciated that I came up to the counter rather than having to bring things to me given how busy it was. Each of us of course got rice pudding to go for later. Step back in the past and enjoy this wonderful...
