looking for Greek & Mediterranean food options in Midtown East? Uncle Gussy's blue truck has you covered. the big food truck is parked at 51st and Park Avenue from 10 am to 3 pm --not 4 pm as listed on the truck's website and elsewhere...I learned this hard way by showing up between 3-4 pm 4X and not finding the truck! 😂 Guys, for the love of God fix your website and Yelp + Google listings! 🙌🏽 the truck is well-maintained and there's typically a line during most prime-time lunch hours. however if you go too late in the day, the truck will typically run out of certain menu items like fries or gyro meat as i found that to be the case, last week.
the menu has something for everyone: comfort foods, relatively healthy eats, sandwiches, platters, salads, and more. there's also soft drinks on the menu. ordered a chicken pita at Uncle Gussy's most recently and it did not disappoint. you can taste the freshness and quality of the veggies and chicken on the first bite. the lettuce had crunch, tomato had that burst of tomato-ey citrus and the chicken had that firm juiciness which you expect from grill led meats. the tzatziki and hot sauce punched up the flavor with cool creaminess and a touch of spice. all in all, you could taste all those flavors separately and enjoy how they combined to give you that simple classic Greek comfort food satisfaction which is not easy to duplicate unless you go to an eatery that knows what they are doing.
the staff is super friendly and kind. hospitality is a lost art but even at this food truck whether you're a regular or a newcomer, the folks here are jovial and...
Read moreUncle Gussy's is a prime model of how food trucks and restaurants should be run. They provide consistent staples of generous servings of high-quality food for a very reasonable price. The meat is always marinated then grilled to perfection. The yellow parboiled rice has zero grease and is always al dente. The salad greens are always fresh and picked up from local farms. One of my favorite staples is the chicken thigh over rice for $7. The tzatziki sauce is pure Greek yogurt and heavy on the garlic, unlike the watered down white sauce from nearby street carts. Their hot sauce made by Franky should be bottled - it's a mixture of Sriracha, Thai sweet chili sauce, and habaneros. My colleagues and I keep stashes at our desks, it's that good.
Similar to the creativity in restaurants, Nicko and Mama put out specials every Tue and Thu. My favorite specials include: skirt steak (marinated in red wine), keftedes (beef balls in tomato sauce), kokkinisto (beef stew in tomato sauce), and porkchop and lemon potatoes. Due to the consistency and variety offered by their staples and specials, I am always able to round up a crew at work to hit Gussy's 2-3 times a week.
In the summertime, the line can stretch to 60 deep. However, do not allow that to daunt you because you will be at the front within 15 minutes. In the event of popular specials, show up before 12:30 because they may run out. On one occasion, the nearby NFL office purchased all the porkchop specials by noon!
Last but not least, Nicko will always take care of you. He is the epitome of outstanding...
Read moreGeneral note as many people have said there is definitely a line if you go during lunch time. I waited about 20 minutes when i went around 1pm. Once I got to the counter i ordered my Gyro platter with the works. It only took about a minute to get my food which was quite refreshing after waiting in line for 20 minutes.
Once you open the container you see the beautifully plated food which a nice balance of colors to make it extremely eye appealing. The food itself was cooked very well. The pork souvlaki was extremely savory and flavorful. The rice was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The tzatziki sauce sauce complements the meat very well and also takes some of the heat away from the hot sauce. Which the hot sauce itself its very flavorful without packing too much kick. The onions were cooked very well but i wish there was a little more flavor there, same with the lettuce and tomato.
Overall the meal was very satisfying and for under 10 dollars you get a huge amount of food. I will definitely consider going again but probably at an earlier or later time because it seems that there will always be long lines...
