it's okay best describes our cocktail experience on tuesday night. We had reservations for Khe-yo next door to celebrate hubby's 60th and thought we'd get all fancy with a crafted adult beverage.
Fancy grilled cheese appetizer was delicious and helped to quell the hunger pains before dinner.
First boo-hoo was that when I ordered the Rebel Flip Flop, was informed that "unfortunately" they were out of heavy cream (at 6:20pm in the city that never sleeps???) for the cocktail I selected... Can you say busboy run to the bodega?
The waiter offered to put together a cocktail under t"he keep calm and carry on" category and basically it was a well executed but boring version of a whiskey sour. He really didn't get what I was looking for - something exciting and unusual but I would say that nothing on that we sampled tasted as good as it sounded on the menu. Overall pleasant but disappointing.
Hubby had the PickPocket - nice, very gingery - which took over most of the flavors but didn't have the subtle nuances that great crafted cocktails like the ones we had had the previous week at Planters House in St. Louis had. Mind you we are chefs, caterers and travelers. Never happy with vin ordinaire.
Sonny boy joined us and ordered a Count Basie - as he loves sour and loves spice. Had a hint of promised jalapeño but no discernible traces of the promised tangerine - mostly tasted of lime with a bit of spice. Okay but not amazing! and given the price etc. won't be back...
Read moreI just moved to the neighborhood and was so looking forward to going here. But unfortunately, it was a terribly disappointing experience. My friend and I popped in late afternoon on Thursday and sat at the bar; only two other patrons were there (who had drinks) and us. The bartender proceeded to move around the bar tidying up but did not acknowledge us for several minutes; so I said hello and asked a question about the level of sweetness of one of their drinks and she said (not kidding) - "How would I know? I don't know what you consider as "sweet."
Not a great start.
We looked quickly at the drink menu and were ready to order and then waited...and waited, all while watching her move around the bar. Maybe she had a bad day or was in a bad mood but that shouldn't be taken out on your customers. At this point, we were just curious how long it would take for us to get a drink....which never came.
To wrap up: another person walked in and joined the other two patrons. He was immediately greeted and asked what they would like to drink. Seriously?!? Are we in high school?? I'm not sure if it was sexism or agism, or not-cool-enough-ism, but truly tedious and tiresome. We immediately left and went across the street to Tiny's upstairs and had a LOVELY cocktail. Skip this one and go somewhere else - there are plenty of fantastic bars in the area and would be happy...
Read moreI’ve always wanted to make it out to the original Weather Up on Vanderbilt but I never really happen to be in that neighborhood. And I never really happen to be in TriBeCa either but as I was there for a restaurant week dinner I knew I needed to head down early to try Weather Up Tribeca.
After quick hunt for the bar (*note it’s right next to Duane Park - didn’t see a sign for Weather Up and at first thought it was part of the restaurant) I found the place based on the address and was happy to see it wasn’t too crowded. There were people there but as it was a drizzly night I assume people were scared away from going out…
The bartender was very kind and not pushy - which I very much appreciate at a place I’m getting a $14 cocktail at.
I had the Winter Cocktail - Anjeo Rum, Homemade Ginger Syrup,Fresh Lime Juice, Allspice Dram & Soda. It was DELICIOUS. very ginger flavored but even my bf who isn’t a big ginger fan LOVED it. AND there was candied ginger on the rim - YUM.
My friend had the Applejack cocktail - Applejack, Apple Cider,Fresh Lemon Juice & Simple Syrup. Also very delicious, a bit on the sweet side but very refreshing.
Overall, it is certainly not somewhere I will be returning to regularly (at least until I have lotsa $$$$$$) but it’s certainly a fun treat when you want...
