Experienced a very uncomfortable situation when the owner called me up to the cashier and, adopting a very condescending attitude, complained about the low tip my two friends and I had left. Our total check was almost $100, which is not a small amount for us to pay. We are on a budget. Still,I wanted to take my friends to try some good Brazilian food. The experience ended in a very low note, though. We felt insulted and humiliated. This is a quite upscale restaurant where you can often bump into celebrities and I am sure our minimum $15 dollar expected tip would not have made much difference for the personnel there, as I am sure, they must receive generous tips all the time. So,why create such an uncomfortable situation for three customers instead of letting it go? After all, tipping is absolutely at the discretion of the customer. We had had a big meal after all and my friends were very happy with the food and restaurant overall. We were planning to come back soon. Well, not anymore. Both my friend from France and my friend from Trinidad were appalled by the owner's behavior. Having just been in France for three weeks now, I agree with my friend that such thing would never happen there. It also made me wonder if I would have faced the same situation if I were not Brazilian or were it not a Brazilian restaurant. Once again, tipping or not or how much is something completely up to the customer. With that attitude, I am afraid the owner and her staff just lost a bunch of customers. But again, it's probably ok, because they don't need our money and...
Read moreOne of my favorite spots to eat out in New York! Casa takes me home when I miss Brazil and I’m so thankful to how this place is hosting events that get the huge Tribeca community together!
This summer, they organized a couple of super fun block parties featuring “roda de samba.” "A roda de samba is a traditional, celebratory gathering in Brazil featuring music, dance, and poetry, where participants form a circle (the "roda") to sing and dance...”
And what was also cool about these parties was to see a cross-cultural and cross-generational crowd in celebration: local families playing and dancing with their kids, Brazilians singing and teaching samba to those around who were curious to learn, people singing along with the musicians…
But there’s always that one person or two who just can’t hide or keep some of their own frustrations to themselves so here I was absolutely shocked by Grant S’ remarks: “...such a disregard and pure disrespect for neighbors and the community, we never signed up to listen to your ghetto music .” This is one guy in Tribeca acting in full prejudice and no shame to show it by his choice of language and territorial remarks.
I talked to the owner about this but also, I was there!! Both events happened on Sundays, starting at around 3-3:30, one ending at 7 and the other at 7:45. The restaurant had a permit, all legit.
Well, I can’t wait for the next one! Especially since we still have some sunny days ahead...
Read moreThe servers were VERY NICE and VERY ACCOMMODATING. Party of 9 with small children. They let us order apps and didn't insist that we order main courses on a Friday night. This is the ONLY reason I'm giving them 3 stars. But the food was ONE star. I got the filet minion with yucca and rice. $39.99 The steak was well cooked but too salty to eat. I was starving and for that $ I forced myself to eat it. The rice and yucca were dry. They forgot my drink order but DID apologize. I won't complain about the slow service because it was very very busy, and of course they don't just cook for the people in the restaurant but also deliveries. I think he whole Doordash, Ubereats or whatever is ruining the in-restaurant experience in NYC. Restaurants should focus on the people who make the EFFORT TO GO OUT TO EAT. If a restaurant wants to do the whole app, take out thing, for people who want to stay home and eat in their underwear, the restaurant should rent an off site industrial kitchen. Everyone in my party was from out of town. I was trying to show them a good time but was VERY embarrassed by the quality...
