Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard — Restaurant in Newark

So to start off, I hope no one minds a little mold in their Italian ice because there is mold in the deep freezers that is never addressed or dealt with. You can also see the years of dirt stained onto the floor. Employees do not have to wear gloves or wash their hands at all during their shift. Overall, a dirty place, not sure how they pass health inspections.

Rita's encourages it's employees to constantly lie to customers. They claim the ice is all-natural, with no artificial coloring and made with real fruit; I can tell you it's a sugar solution with artificial dye (those colors are NOT natural, people) that comes in gallon jugs with preservatives so it can sit on the shelf in the back for months until it's finally made. As for real fruit, I've never seen a single piece in the entire store. Ice is only supposed to be served for 36 hours after it's made but I've seen them change the dates on the stickers so they can leave it out for days. If you order a milkshake, just know that a mysterious brown liquid is added to the custard to change it's consistency into that of a milkshake. It sizzles like an acid, I have no idea what it is.

One reviewer mentioned the employees here seem like they hate their jobs; it's probably because management consistently schedules everyone outside their availability and threatens to fire them if they don't drop everything, like college classes, to come in.

I used to work here, and if you care about your health or about general food safety you should avoid...

Some of your young workers got issues. They have no respect which is common with these nowadays kids. Came in there yesterday Sunday evening after 430pm with a 2 year old baby. Little Caucasian boy (I'm black) gave me one napkin and caught an attitude cause i asked for more napkins for the baby...are you kidding me did you purposefully give one so i can ask for more cause your moves made no sense to me.

Mind you it's extremely hot. And ice cream melts...&kids make a mess. Hell I'm an adult and i make a mess.

And common sense person should know to give anyone more than one napkin. Had you given out more in the first place i wouldn't have had to ask!

I am in love with Rita's cult following flavor "wild black cherry" 🍒 🍧😋😝 BEST FLAVOR EVER!! If u like real summer fresh cherries u must try it 😉 My second favorite is "Swedish fish" just like the candies, I never thought I'd enjoy a flavor of a candy so much lol. If you have a spoiled rotten dog 🐕 at home (or in the car lol) try a "pup cup" a child size serving of vanilla frozen custard with a milk bone treat on top. My dog gets so excited that he's included in our ice-cream/water ice treat time!! And he hasn't had a bad reaction to eating the sweet treat which other things in his past can trigger intestinal distress. When Rita's opens back up for the season (March or April??) go...
