Man, this place was a whole catfish. I’m still in mourning over the cute café that used to be here, and when I heard a new food spot was replacing it, I thought, “Finally, deliverance from campus food”
I get my rice cake dish… portion so small I thought it was an appetizer for my appetite. Like, who’s eating this—me, or a newborn? And honestly, I think the chef taste-tested half of it before sending it out. Oh, and it was spicy. No “mild, medium, hot?” Just straight Dragon’s Breath 3000 one bite and I could feel my ancestors texting me, “Come home.”
My friend orders bibimbap that was supposed to have sauce. Spoiler: it didn’t. She was basically eating dry rice and veggies like she was filming Survivor: Newark Edition.
And the price? Let’s just say if I’m paying that much, I better leave twinning a stuffed thanksgiving turkey. Instead, I left with an empty stomach...

Yumsem truly takes a unique approach to Korean food and I love the creativity they have while also adhering to the basics. Additionally, the tteokbokki had the perfect kick of spice and was made on the spot. You can tell everything’s made with care. The staff were also kind and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. The place itself has a really nice aesthetic vibe and it's a great spot to hang out or grab a meal with friends. Definitely one of my new go-to spots in Newark for Korean food....
Read moreIncredible food, my and my friends have ordered different Kimbaps here and and they were consistently flavorful and authentic. The people are also very wonderful and accomodating. This is definitely a new go-to place for me. I haven't tried any of the meat items yet but I am incredibly happy to know they are halal! Love this inclusivity and I look forward to trying out basically the entire menu!!
Reccomend the spicy tuna Kimbap, and the regular...
