If you want a lunch or dinner item for breakfast, they are usually able to accommodate those types of requests as well. I give J's Family Restaurant my highest level of recommendations, and I simply cannot imagine any reason that a new customer wouldn't feel the same way that I do, when they sample the food from J's...
Read moreFirst time in for breakfast. We were familiar with the J's in Monmouth but never put two and two together with this one in Newberg. Have drove by it a lot but it never screamed "stop here!" to us. We decided to try it one weekday morning. To their credit, the place was clean and staff very friendly. We were impressed with the variety on the menu and the cute names on the daily specials. Our coffee cups were always full and food was delivered quickly. My chorizo scramble was tasty but could have been a bit spicier. The house made pico de gallo added some kick. My wife's corned beef hash was very good. Cooked and shaved in-house, the quality was evident. The only downside was the pancake which was a "sweet" batter and she prefers buttermilk which doesn't seem to be on the menu. Overall, it was a very good meal and we will be returning to try lunch and dinner.
Update 11/14/2021. Stopped in to try lunch a week after our breakfast experience above. Unfortunately lunch was a mixed experience so I've adjusted my star rating down a notch. Spouse ordered the meatball sliders. They were huge and tasty but the brioche bread they came on was too sweet and too soft for these sliders and didn't complement the tasty meatballs and sauce. I ordered the J's Philly. My recommendation - skip it! It was basically a roast beef sandwich with just a few green peppers and onions on top of the meat. If there was cheese, it was hiding well! A true "philly" would be thinly sliced beef grilled with the cheese, lots of onions, and peppers into a gooey mess and served on a bun that would hold up to the moisture. The brioche bun bottom was completely saturated to the point that I could not pick up the sandwich and had to resort to knife and fork. Some of that could have been eliminated by the use of a parchment or paper plate liner to soak up some of the condensation from the hot meat. The top had been brushed with butter or oil so it was slick and sticky. The au-jus and horseradish sides were tasty and well balanced. The "made in-house" potato salad tasted and looked suspiciously like Reser's. It was okay but again, not quite what I would expect from a in-house made potato salad. Wait staff was delightful and mostly the reason that we are willing to give a dinner entree a chance in the coming month.
Update: 2/12/2022 We have been stopping in for breakfast in Saturday's after aqua Zumba. We typically split a breakfast and they are so sweet to actually split it into two plates! Our only comment is that the omelette ingredients are diced way too fine. 1/8 inch cubes cook down to...
Read moreWe planned to eat here on Friday night, but we were told there was a short wait because the kitchen was behind. The restaurant did not look busy, but we could see there were a lot of food tickets. We were not told a time when we asked, but after 15 minutes of waiting a group came in and was told at least 15 minutes. Then we asked again about how long it would be for us and they told us they could seat us, but it would still be a while before we could order. We decided to leave and eat elsewhere, but we came back on Sunday. This time the restaurant looked more busy, but we were sat immediately. No one informed us who our server would be or introduced themselves, but after about 10 minutes, the person I assume was the manager based on their attire, came over and took our order. It was about a 45 minute wait for the mac & cheese burger and the sunflower burger, which seemed like a while. The entire time we were only checked on once and I had to stop our server to ask for a coffee refill. The mac & cheese burger was good, but the macaroni was cavatappi so due to its size, a lot of it fell off the burger. The french fries were very good, but not very hot. My girlfriend got the sunflower burger and she liked it, but it was kind of dry and cold. She upgraded her fries to the sweet potato fries and they were cold and overall not very special. Our experience here wasn’t a bad experience, but there wasn’t really anything special about it. If the food didn’t take so long we’d consider coming back, but the speed of service leaves us with no...
