Gary's New York Deli — Restaurant in Newport Beach

Gary's New York Deli is hands down the most authentic slice of NYC you'll find in Laguna! This hidden gem has become my go-to spot whenever I'm craving a proper deli experience without the cross-country flight.

Their tuna melt deserves its own special recognition - perfectly toasted bread with just the right amount of butter, generous portions of house-made tuna salad (not too much mayo, plenty of flavor), and cheese melted to golden perfection. It's consistently excellent every single time I order it, which is saying something in this day and age.

The outdoor patio is absolutely the place to be, especially on those perfect Southern California days. It's thoughtfully designed with both sunny and shaded areas, comfortable seating, and enough space between tables that you don't feel like you're dining with strangers. The ambiance is actually surprising for a Deli and strikes that perfect balance between casual and charming, with potted plants and subtle lighting that makes evening dining equally pleasant.

Beyond the tuna melt, their entire menu is stellar. The pastrami looks tender, the rye bread fresh, and their pickles provide that perfect garlicky crunch. Portions are generous without being wasteful, and prices are fair for the quality and quantity you receive. Can’t wait to go back and try more!

The staff deserves special mention as well - they're knowledgeable about the menu, efficient with service, and genuinely friendly without being intrusive. It's clear they take pride in the place, which shows in every aspect of the experience.

Gary's is indeed our favorite sandwich shop to visit in CDM. After a beach walk at Crystal Cove, we build up that appetite for a good sandwich after.

Husband chose the New York special with corned beef. Stacked with corned beef, Swiss cheese, cole slaw, Russian dressing, rye bread.

My choice was and always will be the Oven fresh roasted turkey. Mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato, onions, squaw bread.

Added a side of potato salad and cole slaw. super fresh and tasty.

Drinks: iced tea as it always pairs well with any sammiches. And we had to try it, the fresh Banana shake - so good! I think there's an oreo cookie in it. yum!

Quality of all ingredients has maintained, even during covid times. I totally appreciate that they are able to stay open for their customers.

Service is not fast like fast food places. All sammiches are made to order and are as fresh as can be. Be patient. It will definitely pay off.

This is a fantastic New York style deli with a bit of a twist. You can get tacos, hamburgers, fries, and other items. The owner and her daughter were both very friendly and helpful. They will answer and questions and make recommendations that they think will best for what you are looking for. Not what is most expensive. The pastrami was very good. The turkey made in house. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order. Do yourself a favor and spend a could of minutes looking over the menu and maybe asking questions. I ordered the pastrami and was very happy with it. However I wish I had noticed the 3 meat sandwich option on the menu. The build your own. That is what I would have gotten.
