I brought out-of-towners to this restaurant on the day before Halloween. I could not find a restaurant in Newport close to the water, that was open on a Monday, for some reason. The lady who took my phone call convinced me that the food on this restaurant is good, especially the seafood, and it would be a great showcase place for tourists, so I took a chance and booked a reservation for 5 people. Good location as it is right across the Newport Visitor Center and right on Thames St. Our reservation was for 5PM but we arrived 10 minutes early. Thames was not busy and we parked our two cars right in front the restaurant. When we left, we discovered, to our dismay, that we had parking tickets--we failed to see the sign that was at the entrance to Thames. Bummer. What a ridiculous fine; we are right in front of the restaurant and the parking was clearly not busy--but I digress. Back to food. Seafood it is. We ordered calamari for appetizers. For entrees, hot lobster roll, Halibut, Benjamin's Linguini, and Striped Bass. My guests and I were unimpressed. The serving size was good but the lobster was chewy and the linguini was swimming in a lot of sauce (soupy!). The service was good. I felt that having lunch there would've been better.

“Home of the Mothershucker Great food” Had dinner at this cozy and casual steak and seafood restaurant. Service was pretty quick. And the food was really good. We had clam chowder - a tasty treat; garlic bread was this warm soft delicious roll with a crispy outside. We ended up dipping the garlic bread slices on the clam chowder😛. That was really very good. Saw another table order a plate of calamari with hot pepper and decided to order them, too. Just with the peppers on the side as im not spicy food😬. We werent disappointed with that either. We also tried their oysters, and enjoyed them as well - fresh good ones. On point! We were able to get a table just walking in one Tuesday night, which was wonderful because it was pouring that night. Learned that happy hour, which was between 12-2, gave you $1/oyster and $1 clam, so you can eat as many fresh delights as you can during those times. Pretty reasonable. Knocked a star off because you have to go upstairs for the bathroom. Upstairs is the restaurant proper. Downstairs is the bar with several tables. Other than going upstairs for the bathroom, everything was great. Highly recommend dropping by! Enjoy!

Benjamin’s came as a highly recommended place. With one night in Newport, we picked the sure thing for dinner. The ambience was lively and the wait was long for Saturday night, which was fair enough. Once we were seated, it took a long while before a wait staff took our order. To keep things simple, we stuck with Restaurant Week set menu. $35 per person sounded like a good deal and seemingly guaranteed to feature good food from the restaurant. We settled for Rhode Island Chowder; appetizers: Lobster Arancine & Lobster Tamale; entrees: Surf & Turf: “Grass Fed Delmonico” steak with 1.25 lb Steamed Lobster and “Game Cornish Hen” with Baked Stuffed Half Lobster. All the entrees came with triple smashed potatoes and broccolini. Our chowder came lukewarm. We were hoping for a hot bowl of soup on a cold night. Our appetizers were mostly a miss. Lobster Tamale dough definitely wasn’t cooked all the way through. The dough had a mushy uncooked consistency. Our Steamed Lobster, Grass Fed Delmonico and Cornish Game Hen were okay - but the Baked Stuffed Half Lobster was a total miss - Lobster was dry, the stuffing was unflavorful - neither scallops nor shrimp found in this stuffing as featured. At the end of the meal, triple smashed potatoes & broccolini were the stars! Unfortunately, I have to take away a star from this review because of slow service. It took forever for us to get our food!

I feel bad for whatever bathroom I visit next! Came here a couple different times this week and had a few different experiences. First, the downstairs bartender with the black hair and mustache gave us great service and was totally on top of everything. However the food is mostly where this place falls short. Last night had apps and drinks, fish tacos are not fresh and mashed potatoes were cold. Then we went to the upstairs bar after, and the bartender Jammin was blackout drunk, combative, repetitive, was sweating profusely, was slamming stuff down, and raised his voice at us. We finished our drinks and left. Tonight we came back because it’s one of the only places around with late night food and the food is just very disappointing. The hot butter lobster rolls were drenched in butter, but not in a good way. So much butter that it wasn’t a roll, it was soggy. The lobster itself was not fresh. It was chewy texture and yellowish/grey/black. The fries seem like the frozen kind I used to eat as a kid, not something you would expect in Newport Rhode Island on Thames street. Both nights there was lobster shells in the lobster bisque. And there was a hair in the coleslaw. Definitely nauseous post meal.

Benjamin's is excellent. I've been to Newport five times now over the past couple of years, in each season. I'm a foodie, and each time I try new restaurants that are highly rated. Fortunately, Benjamin's was a place I tried on my second visit to Newport in late October. Out of the 20+ restaurants I've been to, Benjamin's is hands down my favorite. The place to be is upstairs. It is cozy and inviting without the loud music that tends to happen downstairs. The bartender upstairs makes the best Long Island I've had anywhere in my multiple travels around the world. As good as the drinks are, the food is better. The main menu is fabulous, and there are nightly specials. I highly recommend the prime rib and lobster thermidor. The best. I have been to Benjamin's on each of my subsequent visits to Newport. It is the only place I look forward to returning to each time I am in town. The staff is down home and friendly. During tourist season May - Oct make advanced reservations if you want to be upstairs. Off season a table can likely be had.

I really wanted a lobster roll when I came to this area, and our group settled on this place to accommodate everyone. I'll start off by saying don't come here for a lobster roll. I've had far better, for less, in a land locked state. It was WAY too tough and chewy. It was decently seasoned, and the presentation was good, but the 5 people who got one in my group all said the same thing. I expected better from all the reviews. We also had a big group that took up the majority of the 3rd floor. The atmosphere was good if you went close to 5. Anytime after that, it gets crowded, and other patrons were rude, asking if we were paying soon. Then, would stand right by our table, hovering over our conversations. I even heard the bartender yell that they were blocking his one enterance/exit to the bar and they barely moved, he could have told them to wait downstairs, what I wish he would have done. If you come here, make a reservation or come early, and don't get the lobster roll.
