Hidden Gem for Real Bar People
As someone with 25 years in the bar industry, I don’t hand out five-star reviews lightly — especially not for dive bars. But Quencher in Newport earned every bit of this one.
First impressions matter. A customer decides how they feel about a place within the first three steps inside — and I’m probably even stricter about that than most. When we first walked in, I noticed the staff didn’t have any real dress code — they blended right in with the customers. Usually, that’s a red flag for disorganization. But this place proved me wrong fast.
We grabbed two seats at the bar. The place was clean, had a relaxed, authentic vibe, and even featured a working old-school photo booth that my wife and I had a blast with.
The bartender greeted us immediately — first green flag. Then I watched him work, and it was obvious: this guy was a seasoned pro. Solid bar awareness, smooth with the pours, clean on the shakes, even did a double strain. My Old Fashioned was spot on — properly muddled, well-balanced. My wife had a simple Tito’s and Coke, and even that came with perfect service.
What really made the night though? The people. The doorman, Pat, came in later, sparked up a great conversation. Turns out, he just launched his own BBQ brand called Oinks & Cluckers and had been working a local beer fest earlier that day. His mom and sister rolled in later, and we all shared laughs and stories like old friends.
Quencher isn’t a polished, tourist-trap kind of spot — and that’s exactly why it’s worth your time. It’s a local bar with soul, run by good people who know what they’re doing and love what they do. Whether you’re in the business or just appreciate genuine hospitality, this place hits different.

Friend wanted to go to the rooftop for birthday drinks so I said whatever, I'll join. We were told to self seat and were given menus after five minutes. 15, 20, 25 minutes go by and he never comes back for drink orders; but everyone else is getting served on the entire roof deck. I'm wondering if our table is by chance the one in the twilight zone that has to order at the bar. Go to the bar and ask if we have a server or if we have to order at the bar. Told we should have a server and he should be coming. Told him it's been 30 min and he seemed horrified and said he would send someone right over. Ten minutes pass and the two servers continue to go to every table but ours. I then just start ordering at the bar, which the bartender was fantastic! It wasn't until our second round of drinks ordering from the bar that the server seemed to realize us. The owner and several other employees were walking around multiple times and we tried to get their attention, but no one seemed to care. I was just baffled by this. The views are not worth the service and prices to only get two drinks in...
