McCurdy Sailing — Local services in Newport

McCurdy Sailing came highly recommended after we were unable to follow through with our initial rental from our hotel, but everything turned out great! We had a great time chit chatting with Captain David as we sailed around pointing to all the places we visited from a different vantage point.

David was excellent and had an in-depth answer for all the questions we had for him. We asked questions ranging from the history and landmarks of Newport to the animal species native to the surrounding areas. Overall, our party had a very valuable experience and it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Must add: While sailing we got to observe other charters loaded with people and I have to say we appreciated being able to just sail around with our small group of people. We had freedom to move around and enjoy our picnic and celebrate the Birthday Girl on board. We could stretch our legs and take awesome photos, definitely a plus if this is your first sailing experience.

Captain David had a Bluetooth speaker available for us to use so make sure you come prepared with a playlist you love.

I plan on chartering McCurdy sailings again as an experience for my family the next time I’m in the area. It was a SO relaxing and that’s exactly what we wanted but you can make the experience what you need it to be for sure with a great boat and captain...

During our recent vacation in Newport, RI, we discovered McCurdy Sailing and decided to embark on a private sailing adventure. Having never been on a sailboat before, I was eager to experience the beauty of Newport from the water, and Captain David did not disappoint.

Captain David was exceptionally knowledgeable about Newport and its rich history. His expertise and passion for sailing were evident as he guided us through Newport Bay, pointing out stunning estates and sharing fascinating stories about the area, aboard the gorgeous "Hurrah." Despite a mix of weather conditions, I felt completely safe throughout the journey, thanks to Captain David's skill and experience.

The sailboat provided an intimate and luxurious way to explore the scenic coastline, making me feel as though I had stepped back into the elegance of the Gilded Age. The experience was nothing short of magical, offering breathtaking views and a serene escape from the hustle and bustle.

On July 1, we took a private sunset cruise on the 36-foot sailboat, Hurrah, with Captain Dave and are now hooked. The Hurrah has comfortable cushioned benches under a canopied area that accommodates a maximum of 6 people. Captain Dave is extremely pleasant, friendly and knowledgeable of the area. Since the seating is located directly in front of the steering wheel, we had fantastic conversations with the Captain. Our 5 1/2-year-old granddaughter was not too sure about even going on the sailboat, but Captain Dave made her feel at home and invited her to stand at the wheel and steer once we cleared the harbor. She did a surprisingly good job of staying on course with his subtle guidance, and was beside herself with excitement! We also enjoyed the higher seats located on either side of the sailboat, offering unobstructed views. We were looking for a unique fun-filled, avoid-the-crowds, laid-back experience on a sailing vessel, and Captain Dave and the Hurrah certainly surpassed our expectations.
