Vincent's is a family tradition. Coming from Wilkinsburg, it's the pizza they grew up with. Hence, it is the pizza de jure that all other pizza in the house is compared to. I honestly don't recall having had it before this weekend, but in trying all the pizza places around Pittsburgh that I can - it was time to make the family pilgrimage back to Vincent's Pizza Park.
Now, the first thing to say is that Vincent's is old-fashioned from top to bottom. No paying by card, no timed orders. You call for pizza, or you show up for pizza, and you get pizza. They have their menu, and they have their way of doing things. And that's that. If you're concerned about alterations, I would look somewhere else.
That also goes for the service. Seat yourself, and the servers are on the way. They do what they can to amke sure every customer is taken care of. If you're take out? Same thing, except they'll remember your face and bring it out without as many check ins. If you're looking for modern amenities, or a sophisticated service vibe, this place isn't it. But, they care, and will look after you.
Then comes the pizza.
It is a greasy pizza that's thin like a new-york crust in the center, and stays that way until the crust, which builds up thick and doughy like a Detroit/Sicillian Pan pizza.
It goes without saying that the Vinny Pie style pizza is one of the most greasy pizzas around, and for some, that means one of the best. Others might think it one of the worst for that reason. I like both non-greasy and greasy pizza, so it was a very good meal. Moreover, my mother loves greasy pizza, and it was exactly what she wanted after a hard, but special, day. So, it did what it was supposed to do and beyond.
I got a 1-topping Pepperoni, and a 3-topping Mushroom, onion, and green pepper. The latter was my favorite. They drifted a bit into one spot on the drive home, but it was fresh, hot and delicious. That's also to say, I'd really like their cheese pizza, I think. There's a unique flavor profile in the cheese that's not quite a typical newyork, but also not unusual or off-putting. The sauce is light, and does what it needs to, but otherwise doesn't stand out too much.
The Peperoni was good, and there was a ton of it. Some of it was crisped to perfection, other parts weren't quiet there. It was a very sharp pepperoni taste, which some might love. It wasn't quite to my preference, with how much there was, but I'm not knocking it. It's the perfect pizza for someone.
Suffice to say, I hear a lot of talk about how a greasy pizza is a cop out, or a sign of bad quality. I don't believe that. I think that it appeals to a flavor profile that some people love, and I happen to like. And if that's what you're looking for, good luck beating Vincent's Pizza Park. A Pittsburgh tradition, and one...
Read moreIncredibly rude over the phone. I had a question about the order i made over the phone tonight and they just hung up on me. I want to ask about purchasing a half bake, since their open schedule is pretty random. I figure at this point, whatever, if they want to lose a sale, that's fine.
I have just moved here and had ordered this once before. On that occasion, i arrived at the time they gave me and ended up waiting for 20 more minutes. So this time, they told me an hour wait. So i gave them an hour and a half before I arrived. I had to wait 30 more minutes on-site when to get my food.
This was annoying, of course, but what made it worse was that when i gave them my name, i asked if the order was ready. She told me it was coming out of the oven and being cut. I would have never given them my money if she had told me the truth. The truth was it was nowhere even close. And and they secured my money before i could walk out the door when i found out. This is probably why it's cash only. Whatever, I've learned my lesson, i'm not complaining (as others already were), they're having a tough time clearly, i'll just shut up and wait. I've been there before, i have sympathy.
I get home, i cut the paper (they don't use boxes, so prepare the interior of your car with tarps, this is the greasiest pizza on earth), and am met with an abomination that is somehow burnt on all sides and water in the middle.
I'd advise passing on this and heading to shelly pie. I personally feel they're the superior product. Same idea with the type of pizza, executed much better. Less greasy, better dough, cooked correctly. Plus, they're very polite and all orders have been timely.
Vincent's seems to run on reputation alone. It hasn't lived up to what people have told me of it. Might've been old news. And judging by the other customers complaining to staff, i'm not the only who won't be...
Read moreVisited this local legend tonight for the first time. A seriously historical pizza place, credited with helping introduce pizza to Pittsburgh in the 1950s. So, neat to try it out from that standpoint. After that, considering this is 2018 and not 1953, things drop off pretty fast.
Where to begin? The friendly wait staff is frazzled on a busy Saturday night. And, judging from the amount of takeout business being done, this is a typical amount of business. Our server told us to expect a 1 hour wait for our pizza, which arrived in one hour and 20 minutes.
The pizza itself is very bready and suffered from being over loaded with too much cheese and liquid toppings. Very messy and not able to be eaten by hand - this is pizza you must eat with silverware. The edges of the crust are very, very thick.
The establishment itself is very plain and had a large number of very bored patrons sitting around staring at their phones while they waited. It was sort of like a half room of zombies. People who were waiting so long for food they were resting their heads on the table or just staring at their phones.
If you aren't already in the Vincent Pizza cult, don't bother. You will likely be disappointed. I have a hard time understanding why it could possibly have been so busy. You can do better.
I think, like any really institutionalized local legend, eventually they become like insects trapped in amber - frozen in time. People have such nostalgia they overlook obvious shortcomings. This place, with no wifi, no credit cards, a clearly posted "if you don't like it our way, get out" attitude was very busy and doesn't appear to need any new customers.
They don't have to worry about that with us. Although our experience was not horrible, we will not be back. Our opinion: don't waste your time. You can have better pizza, in a more pleasant atmosphere and with better service in any...
