The food in general was okay. We ordered the bistec sandwich, plantains and guacamole and the cheese sandwich. The mojo sauce was good with the plantains and bites of the bistec were good.
Our issue with our meal was the service. There were about five tabletops occupied, including ours, and five or six members of waitstaff. We were seated right away and our waitress stopped by relatively quickly to take our drink order.
At this point is when or service went a little eschew. It took ten plus minutes for our drinks to get to us. If the restaurant and bar was packed I would understand waiting but we sat right next to the bar and watched the bartender, the hostess and two waitresses sit there and flip through their phones before our two bottles of red stripe were eventually brought to us.
When the drinks were delivered, we placed two appetizers and our two sandwiches. The food came to us very quickly, approximately five minutes but it all came out together. I was expecting the appetizers to come first followed by the sandwiches. To be fair to the waitstaff though, I did not request them to come slightly apart but I thought that was the common practice.
Once all of our food was delivered, our waitress turned into a ghost. It took twenty five minutes for her to check in on us. Again if they were slammed, I would understand but there whole waitstaff sat around taking and looking at their phones. When she eventually stopped by my wife ordered another drink 15 minutes later the waitress stopped by with the check, never acknowledging the missed drink and quickly pushed us from the restaurant.
I was a bartender for seven plus years and my wife was a waitress growing up. We don't have crazy high standards for service since we've been there before and understand that everyone can have a bad night or be new and overwhelmed. This was neither of those. This seemed to be a complete lack of leadership within the restaurant with no one being held accountable. A very young waitstaff that was more interested in everything besides working.
We have always had good experiences with the downtown location but unfortunately we will not be visiting the oak creek...

I have fond memories of the original Cubinatas in downtown Milwaukee. The location, the decor, & the atmosphere made it a real special destination spot for me. When I found out there was a new, closer one, I was there on my 1st opportunity. We walked in and were invited to sit anywhere we liked. We (ultimately) chose a table inside and waited (kid u not) at least 7-10min before we were waited on or asked for drinks. It. Wasnt. That. Busy. Despite that, staff was friendly and accomodating. Even making a spiked Arnold Palmer for me on the fly.
For apps, I ordered everything I really wanted to try:
Plaintain platter was delicious, especially the hard strips combined with the guac or mojo sauces...mmmmm! Makin my mouth moist just thinkin about it!
The Cubinatas Chicken Tenders were hefty, but a bit dry. The plaintain crust looked really promising but lacked any significant flavor.
The chix/raisin empanadas were also good, but less flavorful than I remember. But the ground beef & cheese one was great!
For entrees, the Macita Bowl was filling! ..crispy pork strips with rice & beans & peppers! The bed of white rice and black beans had minimal flavor. But the crispy, hefty strips of pork more than made up for that. The meat was bursting with enough flavor for the whole dish. I can only assume the rice & beans were made without much salt/seasoning on purpose so patrons could add their own...but there was also no salt/pepper on the tables!
The cuban sandwich was delish...cant really go wrong there.
The ribs were meaty, tender, & flavorful with the guava bbq sauce. But again, the rice and beans lacked any salt/seanoning.
But the texture and taste of real quality meat & ingredients in every bite of everything I had was ever-present. Thats what makes Cubinatas special! It truly tastes like home-cooking made with love and with the best ingredients! Thats ultimately what I take away from every visit to Cubinatas ...and I will definitly,...
Read moreUpon googling and searching for new restaurants I discovered this place which I deeply regret. We decided to try this (new to us) place and I must say we regret doing so. The food we purchased at Cubainitas has been the worst food I’ve purchased from a restaurant in a while.
We ordered 2 ropa vieja meals as well as tostones and as you can see by the picture, the tostones were burnt and disgusting. If you don’t know tostones are suppose to have more of a yellow color to them rather than the pictured burnt brown with black around the edges. I was appalled that these employees knowingly gave us burnt tostones.
The rice was hard yet kind of mushy at the same time. It tasted like they mixed a pot of undercooked hard rice with a pot of mushy rice. If the rice was actually cooked properly it probably wouldn’t have been so bad.
The ropa vieja (beef) was a small portion and had an odd flavor. Not sure what it was but something we ate gave us a stomach ache.
We paid over $44 for two ropa vieja meals with a side of tostones and we felt robbed and ripped off. Tonight was our first and last time buying food from this place.
I really wish I would have read some of the reviews prior to ordering from this place. Especially after reading a review stating that they saw a roach on the table they were seated at.
Judging from what I tried, the food doesn’t taste authentic. The next time I want some real and authentic Cuban food I’d rather commute 25-30 minutes to the restaurant on the south side of Milwaukee than going here again.
But hey maybe some of their other menu items aren’t so bad. Personally, the fact that they were okay with knowingly giving us burnt tostones and mushy yet hard rice gave me a bad 1st impression of the restaurant which definitely drove my future...
