Going inside, it's a little confusing how things work, but the staff was very friendly and personable. You walk in and order at a very tall counter that a shorter person like myself can barely see over. Then you walk down the line and pay, and wait for them to announce what you ordered. It's cramped in that corner and we had a bit of trouble figuring out how to balance trays and cups, but it worked out. The food was good. A local recommended the pulled pork z-man(pictured). It wasn't the best ever like some other reviews, but it was good, real food. I don't think it's worth the hype, but definitely worth the visit if you're passing through the area. The atmosphere was just like any other larger BBQ joint, lots of wood, close tables, and convoluted seating logic. There were three levels of seating, which made no sense, and it was a total maze. I would hate to be there during their busy hours. If there were really lines out the door, I would suspect that one would find themselves tripping over everyone else and struggling to find a table, especially for larger parties. TL;DR good place and worth the visit. Hearty food.

$50 for two burnt end plates and 2 sodas. Burnt ends - as it says, in the name are supposed to be at least somewhat burnt and crispy. Longer cooking process render the fat from the meat. Leaving behind delicious, crispy edges, and chewy textured meat full of flavor. However, these “ Burnt ends” were cubes of fat globules that were bland and not even close to crispy. Whether or not you sauce your meat prior to pulling it off the grill is a matter of taste and opinion. But if you choose not to do that, (resulting in tasty, sweet and spicy caramelized sauce that’s baked into the surfaces of the burnt ends), Then you better damn, sure use enough dry rub prior to putting them on the grill to make sure that there is flavor left on the meat before you put it on a plate. This was not the case in this instance with our visit to this restaurant. Not only were they not burnt, and not caramelized; they were also bland. Might also add that this restaurant asks For a tip paying. This always leaves me a little uncomfortable, especially on a first time visit when I didn’t know what to expect. You wait in line to place your own order at the front, wait in line to pay for your order, after which you are given your own cups, so you can get your own drinks, and then you The window to get your own food And bring it to a table that you find yourself. I can’t fathom the point of why they are asking for tips - nor who they would give the tips too??? We got our own drink refills, Our own sauces, our own place settings…. There was no service at all whatsoever. Lastly, I’ll say that the restaurant is concrete floored, with no ceiling, tiles and hard surface seating, so there is nothing to dampen the music which is playing too loudly, when combined with restaurant ambient noise, diners shouting over each other, and the music, the clang of silverware and children yelling. It doesn’t make for a comfortable environment in which to have a nice conversation with your table mates.

I've been going to Joe's for years and years & it's definitely a favorite. One thing that has changed since covid that is off putting is the ordering process. You still wait in line for a long period of time, but at the Olathe location the gentleman taking your order fairly aggressively tries to guilt you into tipping the crew. I've been watching this for several months now, and it clearly makes other customers uncomfortable as well. I want to help out as much as the next guy, but when you stand in line for 15-30+ minutes, get your own drink, etc and the food is fairly expensive, it just doesn't seem like an additional tip is warranted or the guilt trip that comes with it. Leave the tip cup at eye level like it is and that's it. If someone wants to tip it's super obvious and not necessary to solicit any further. Just my opinion. But food is always consistently great! Update: The aggressive request for tips is no longer a thing at this location. So this is a pleasant change. Food is still excellent & one of my favorite BBQ places in KC.

Is there better BBQ in KC? Yes, but Joe’s is always a group pleaser. My wife lives and dies by the Z-Man, as do many Joe’s visitors. She’s had the chicken and beef before, and prefers the beef, but says the chicken is solid. I’ve heard good reports on the portobello version too. I prefer just getting the pulled pork and giving it a good hit with their sauce. Joe’s does have a fine sauce; just the right amount of sweet and zesty. Great for dipping fries. Speaking of fries, they’re always a good side option. A ‘side’ of fries generally serves two people. They have pretty good baked beans too. On this particular visit, I tried the deep fried soft shell crab Po’Boy sandwich; it was alright, but I felt like the breading was a bit much. I’d probably stick to a traditional BBQ sandwich in the future. The Olathe location usually seems to be the less busy of the three, but the line still gets pretty long during meal hours. If you’ve never been, it’s a KC tradition at this point.

Holy smokes. I decided to try this restaurant since everyone I encountered recommended. The Chicken “Z-man sandwich” was so delicious. I did not expect how good it was! I had the potato salad, banana cream pie and a margarita. I’m not one to really enjoy Banana cream pie or BBQ but I really loved my meal. The sauce in the Z-Man sandwich was so good and it completed the fried onion rings nicely. The lady and the register was so friendly, she introduced herself and welcomed me to Kansas. All the staff seemed to nice! I highly recommend giving this place a try. This was my second time going to Joe’s Kansas and my goodness was it as amazing as I remembered. I have been dreaming about this sandwich since the last time I hade it. There was a gentleman who mentioned the apple crisp dessert which was amazing. Since I live out of state, I was told that the z man can be shipped! Please open a location in the airport so I can take them with me on the plane 😁. Highly recommend.

Tried this spot for a team lunch after a basketball tournament and wasn't disappointed. Large, well cleaned dining room that was filled with the smell of all that smokey goodness. The line to get food was out the front door, and an employee came and told us we needed to wait outside so they could close the door... a little rude, but it happens. The line moved pretty quickly, and the girl at the counter was very nice. I ordered the Rocket Pig sandwich that was pulled pork, bacon, pepper jack cheese, and fried jalapeños, and I added a side of fries. The sandwich was amazing!! A great mixture of sweet, savory, and spicy. The bun was hot and soft, the meat was all cooked well, and the fries were hot, crispy, and full of seasoning! I also had the "seasonal dessert," which was homemade banana pudding! It was creamy and full of fresh banana flavor and a delicious crust! Definitely recommend giving it a try. They have a ton of locations for good reason!!
