A Disgraceful, Dishonest Establishment Running Scams – Avoid at All Costs ( I would give 0 stars if I could)
On January 25th, 2025, I visited Charley’s and ordered a sandwich and a large drink for $18.62, which I paid using Apple Pay. As the payment was processing, the worker deliberately canceled the transaction ( as the payment was taking a few moments to process) by pressing the cancel button (X) and then proceeded to turn off the register entirely. When the register was turned back on, the card machine confirmed the payment had successfully gone through. My bank immediately notified me that $18.62 had been deducted from my account.
However, the worker falsely claimed I had not paid and demanded I pay again. I showed them clear evidence on both my Apple Pay app and my physical bank app that the payment had been approved and the funds were taken. Despite this irrefutable proof, the worker refused to acknowledge the payment, continually insisting I pay a second time.
This situation escalated further when other staff members, including the manager, joined in. Instead of resolving the matter professionally, they lied, gaslit me, and tried to manipulate me into paying twice. At one point, I was even asked in a patronizing and offensive tone, “Do you actually speak English?” (As a British citizen whose first language is English, I found this deeply insulting.)
For 30 minutes, I stood my ground, repeatedly showing them proof that the payment had gone through, yet they continued to deny it and treated me with utter disrespect. It became clear that they were intentionally trying to double-charge me, likely to cover up their own mistake or worse, to exploit customers. After being humiliated, manipulated, and blatantly lied to by multiple workers, I left without paying again, as I had already paid for my order, which I never received ! They finally told me that it “wasn’t their issue” and I should “take it up with my bank.”
I contacted my bank, who confirmed the payment had gone through and reversed the charge. I also instructed my bank to block payments to Charley’s to prevent any further fraud. However, the next day, I discovered a new unauthorized charge from Charley’s for the same amount. This charge was made at a time the establishment was closed, which is proof they fraudulently processed a fake in-person transaction.
This is beyond unacceptable. Charley’s staff are not only incompetent but also dishonest and unethical. They lied, manipulated, and tried to defraud me. Even when faced with undeniable evidence, they refused to accept responsibility for their mistake and instead attempted to bully me into paying twice. Their behavior was not just poor customer service—it was criminal.
I urge everyone to avoid this establishment at all costs. The workers and management are unprofessional, deceitful, and shameless in their attempts to exploit customers. If you value your time, money, and dignity, stay far away from Charley’s.
