Dear Oxford,
The Velvet Ditch on the beautiful corner of the square is the place to be. Truly beautiful inside and out, with impressive design, environment, and an overall architectural feel.
I went there last night (Thursday) and got to share my love for The LandShark/Velvet Ditch with my dad from back home (Arkansas) as he came here to see me on a quick trip.
I’m pleased to say that from the opening weekend to now—a total of three visits—the experience and quality have been consistently top-notch, as if I were in a fine dining establishment, with no room to disappoint.
As a fan of food and Sprite (big fan), I can easily tell that the crew notices and pays attention to the small things. Every little detail matters. I believe that by now I have tried a good portion of the menu, and you will be more than satisfied no matter what you order. I myself am a major fan of the Ro-Wings—big, breaded, and rich in flavor with plenty of portions to fill you up at a great value. Drenched in a sauce of your choice, there are plenty of options and heat levels to suit anyone.
As for the Sprite, it had a great syrup-to-carbonated ratio, providing the right amount of sweetness and allowing it to settle well. As mentioned previously, the attention to detail is evident; I can easily tell the quality of the water, ice, and the overall freshness of the syrup that they serve to their customers. Even though it may cost them more, they do not cut corners.
Last but not least, the customer service. This category is a make-or-break deal for me at any establishment! Here, it does not come up short at all. Jared and his wonderful team kept me and my table cared for and never left us searching for someone or something. Drinks were refilled on time and quickly, feedback was checked to ensure the new food items were proper, and our TV provided entertainment. Any staff member that walked by and noticed we didn’t have something took the initiative to solve it: refills, napkins, etc. Once again, attention to detail on point.
Overall, this is a refreshing place to see in Oxford that won’t overstimulate you with the traditional party bar scene and will allow you to enjoy good quality food with matched customer service as...
Read moreI chose this place because of the good reviews, unfortunately I could not rank it higher than 3 stars. I came for lunch during an early afternoon. Not busy, about 8 patrons total in the place. I was greeted warmly by staff that I encountered when I entered and when leaving. That's the highlight of this visit. Some issues...
a 20% gratuity is added to every check. Not for large parties...single guests as well. I dont mind the tip, I tip at least 20 % anyway, but as I suspected--with the tip already included you barely get any customer service because the server doesn't have to make an effort for a tip. I had to wave for my server each time I needed something. She was seated comfortably at the bar with other staff.
plastic plates! My meal was served in on a plastic disposal plate like I was at a picnic.
flies, flies, flies. So many that you spend your time trying to eat with one hand and wave flies away with your other hand. I wonder what the kitchen/prep area is like...I also hated that my food came while I was in the restroom and when I returned there were flies swarming table. Sigh.
Decor-- its funky and cute for the college crowd. Mostly painted black, the faux flower arrangements throughout...you know the trend.
All in all, im glad I visited. I feel as though I always eat at the same places when I visit Oxford. It was nice to try a new place. I would possible return for drinks at the bar if no other place was available, but I will NOT return for lunch or dinner. Im all for low key and casual, but the plastic plates and the lack of attention from my server are reasons for not returning...

Review for The Velvet Ditch
The Velvet Ditch is hands-down one of the best dining and social experiences in the area. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that strikes the perfect balance between upscale and comfortable. The decor is stylish without feeling pretentious, and the vibe is consistently vibrant without being overwhelming.
What truly sets this place apart, though, is the leadership. Jared, the owner, is nothing short of phenomenal. His passion for hospitality is evident in every detail—from the thoughtfully curated menu and drink selections to the attentive, genuinely friendly staff. You can tell he deeply cares about both his team and his guests. It’s rare to see an owner so hands-on and approachable, making sure everyone feels at home.
The food is consistently excellent—creative without being overcomplicated, and always executed with precision. Whether you’re in the mood for a crafted cocktail at the bar or a full dinner with friends, The Velvet Ditch delivers every time.
Highly recommend for a night out, date night, or any time you want to treat yourself to something special. Five stars...
