I recently visited this restaurant with my group of three after putting ourselves on the waitlist through the app. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we found the parking lot to be in terrible condition. Considering the size of the restaurant, there simply wasn't enough parking available, and we had to resort to parking in neighboring store lots.
Once inside, we were greeted promptly at the door and quickly attended to at the check-in desk. Our hostess, Ashley Y., was friendly and full of energy. She took our order with great attention to detail and helped us with everything we needed, including answering all of our questions.
Now, let's talk about the food. The house-brewed root beer had an off taste compared to previous experiences. It felt like it was lacking some flavor, although I couldn't quite pinpoint what was missing.
The tomato soup, which was the main reason we chose this place, was warm and fresh. It came with three croissants that, when mixed into the soup, provided a deliciously smooth texture. If you prefer a different texture, I recommend eating the croissants off the top without mixing. The creamy warmth of the soup was refreshing, and the basil added a perfect touch to the flavor.
The sweet potato fries were nothing out of the ordinary; they tasted like regular sweet potato fries. Just add ketchup, and they're good to go!
Moving on to the baked potato, the exterior had a soft and dry texture with a slightly salty flavor. However, the inside was moist and soft, and with butter and sour cream, it tasted splendid.
As for the slow-roasted tri-tip (medium rare), it was extremely salty on the outside. It was easy to cut and chew, with a slight bitterness to it, but the overall taste was decent. I had higher expectations for it.
When I tried dipping the slow-roasted tri-tip (medium rare) in au jus, it tasted better, especially the inside part of the steak. The au jus cleaned off some of the saltiness, but it still didn't quite reach the level of flavor I was expecting. I ended up taking half of it home to eat later.
The brownie Pazookie came out warm and fresh. The first bite was delicious and mouth-watering. The nuts in the ice cream added a wonderful crunch, and the sweetness of the Pazookie was perfection. The only downside was that if you accidentally scrape the pan it was cooked in while scooping your Pazookie, you can taste a metallic flavor.
Apart from some noisy children, which is to be expected on a Saturday night and beyond the restaurant's control, the noise level and music were at an appropriate level. Conversations could be held without having to yell at the person next to you. You could talk at a normal voice level, similar to being at home with the TV on in the background.
Overall, the staff and environment were wonderful, earning themselves the tip I paid for the meal. However, the food fell slightly short of the quality I expected for the price. Except for the soup and Pazookie, most dishes felt lower in quality. As we left the restaurant, we were warmly wished a nice day and thanked...
Read moreI’ve been going to BJ’s since my senior year of high school, which equates to 33 years. It started out being a Friday night thing at Balboa Beach, CA as a senior in high school. Moved to Texas in 2005 and was so happy to see that my beloved BJ’s was there. Now, after 17 years in TX, I’m moving back to Cali and sitting at BJ’s in Oxnard, CA. And here’s where I’m at: Bartender is sweet and pretty good, not exceptional. Food is sub-par and it’s been going downhill for years. Their prices have gone up and their food has gone WAY down. I’ve been feeling like this for a few years in Texas and now after tonight in CA, I’m so sad to say that this will be my last time at BJ’s. Their burgers are dry, their chicken sandwich is dry and flavorless and the buns on everything are dry and way too fluffy. The meat from not the French Dip and the Philly is dry, chewy and tastes cheap and old every time I get it. Half my sandwich today came with nothing but the meat on half of it, which is careless planning in the kitchen when it should have cheese, green peppers and grilled onions. Their fries are still good but their Ranch is fake and gross. The appetizer list has decreased in selection and hasn’t changed for several years and it’s just boring and the best thing on it is the siracha chips and queso with green chilis (when they remember to add the green chilis). My favorite menu item has always been the Great White personal pizza and I always have to ask for extra Alfredo sauce because it’s so dry. When I’ve had the Tuna salad the tuna has been fishy, and this has been multiple times over the last few years. When I’ve had the fried chicken salad there is so much ice burg lettuce it’s flavorless outside of the dressing. To be honest, I really feel like I’ve had better diner food in ghost towns. They say all good things come to an end and today is a super sad, sad day for me because I’m making a promise and commitment to myself to sever my 33 year long relationship with BJ’s, and what’s even more sad than that is that I know that this review will not make one bit of difference in them upping their game and going back to the BJ’s they used to be… and that’s the saddest thing of all… Because they used to stand for quality. They used to have drinks named after bartenders that made them up. They used to be that place I wanted to go to with all my friends after a church dance, a school function, a weekend night at the beach, and a nostalgic moment. But no more. At some point a smart person has to make hard choices and this is one of those times. So long BJ’s. You were good back in the day and you had your time. But those days have long passed and now you’re just a commoner on the platform of a glorified McDonald’s with sub-par food that doesn’t warrant this inflated high prices in any level. So yuk and just yuk!...
Read moreNormally I don't write reviews, good or bad. However this warrants one, I believe. First off I have worked in the service industry and for quite some time. I understand the kitchen can be a crazy place to work; as I spent a fair amount of time working in the kitchen. When you drop $40+ on dinner for two, you should get $40 worth of dinner and or service depending. We took out, so I understand less care goes into it. However, when you order spinach dip, you should getyou should get the full serving of spinach dip. How do you figure less than half a cup and a tray of broken tortilla chips warrants 10.25? If you're a restaurant worth it's salt, you make your tortilla chips in the house. It's extremely cost-efficient and very easy to do. There's no reason you should be giving out a dish of broken tortilla chips, after all how the hell are you going to dip anything? I will say the parmesan crusted chicken was on point. As it was last time I ordered it. However the tacos as you can see or another story. First of all you can't really call them tacos anyway. But why the hell is there a pound of tomatoes on the one on the left and all the feta cheese on the one on the right? Make sense to you? Nah bro. Me neither. All the chicken on the one on the left, a small piece on the one on the right. Do yourself a favor, don't order when they're busy. Learn to cook, seriously it'll save you some money and frustration, and some time using your thumbs. Since I'm sure you can find something better to do like read a book. Normally everything is on point but I get how things go awry in the kitchen. What I don't get is how you send out two very screwed up dishes and everyone co-signs on that? Like I said normally everything is on point though, so don't take this as a guarantee on the experience you will have, that's why I gave it 3 stars, because it was still good. I may have got leftovers by accident. ...
