Elder Piper is a newly opened brewery in Petoskey, and I am so glad I checked it out. It is located just south of the main downtown district. It is right next to the new Downtown Greenway which is very cool. They were actively removing railroad tracks for the conversion while I was there.

The owners gave me a wonderful tour of the facility. I was impressed with the mix of new brewing technology and historic charm. The bar is made of reclaimed wood from the renovation – neat! It’s clear that much thought and planning was put into the design of the brewery.

Elder Piper has a nice offering of beers and cider. I am more of a beer drinker, but the cider I had was delicious. It uses apples from the area, and I can appreciate that. The Beach Grass Helles Lager was my favorite, and my wife loved the Thimbleweed Hazy IPA. It is refreshing to see a mix of different beer styles even though the brewery just opened. We ordered a flight to try other beers, too. All of them were tasty and defect-free, which can be hard to find sometimes…

There are some snacks available for purchase, but I think outside food can be brought in. The taproom has plenty of tables and seats. They even have a collection of games for guests to use.

We didn’t use the outdoor area, but it looks very cool. I will enjoy a beer outside in the beer garden next time I go. Elder Piper is a great new addition to the Northern Michigan craft beer scene, and I can’t wait...

We just visited the brewery for our second visit. This is a nice place and a great addition to the community. It is a nice location as well, especially if or when the Downtown Greenway path expands to go right past the brewery. It would be nice to stop there for a pint on a long bike ride.

The brewery is being promoted as a local community bar, but with the mediocre pints charging $8 a pint is going to be a tough sell as it is on the pricey side for that level of beer. The summer tourists probably won’t mind the price. In my opinion, if you want to draw in local regulars, the price should come down at least to $7 a pint, and the quality of the beer will need to come up. I am fairly confident that the quality of their beer will get better over time.

The owner we spoke to is nice and I wish them the best. Welcome to the...

Concur with all the reviews saying this is the best brewery in northern Michigan! Every beer I tried was fantastic, and the space they’ve set up is awesome. It is bring your own food or you can get stuff from the food cart outside (not open in the winter). We brought are two small kids, and there was plenty of room for my toddler to move about. They also had a corner of books, including some kid books and couches for him to read on. We tried to come back for trivia night, but they were packed. I would definitely try and go for their other events in the future! Easy parking in the lot adjacent to...

Solid beer across the tap list. Can’t believe they’ve only been open 6 weeks and excited to keep coming back and seeing what they come up with next. Beer notes: If you like Two Hearted or Centennial IPA you will lose your mind for Wingstem and never regain your sanity again. Fairy Slipper stout… Robust and balances that smoky line of sweet and dry. Refined enough you’d think they’d brewed it 100 times already to calibrate the flavours to perfection. Ironweed IPA… huge kick in the tastebuds (in the best kind of way).

My wife is from Petoskey and we spend some time here every summer visiting her family. During our most recent trip we went to Elder Piper and it is hands-down the best brewery experience I’ve had in my years of visiting Petoskey. I’ve been to many places that do both beer and cider and I’m almost always unimpressed with both, but at Elder Piper everything is top notch. I particularly recommend the Vienna Lager, Imperial Stout, and Barrel Aged Cider. We will definitely be back here during our future visits to Petoskey!
