Michelle was great and fantastic - My girlfriend and I appreciated her personal touch remedying an off-putting issue we had with one of our dishes. Michelle was the saving grace of this evening and she should be lauded by the executive team as a gem in the industry. Because BEFORE Michelle came to talk to us at the end of the night, my impatience and dissatisfaction for the entire handling of the situation had left me quite irritated on the inside (or maybe I've just missed one too many yoga classes lol)
The chef himself did come out to somewhat apologize for the hair in our food which we appreciated him coming out of service to talk to us, but to be honest -- the hair definitely came from back of house somehow. Because it was legit EMBEDDED in our tamale, like the first forkful my girlfriend took out of the tamale, a long hair just keep rising with her fork from the inside of the tamale, tangled within the tamale's contents. I'm not usually one to be too picky as let's be honest, what happens in back-of-house stays in back-of-house. But it was a bit of a grisly sight to see a long hair slowly pulling out as if it was a long string of gooey cheese on a New York pizza slice.
Michelle was the only one who made it clear that the dish would be re-made (even when my girlfriend and I decided we didn't need it anymore), comped, and offered dessert as well. ALL OF WHICH IS ABOVE AND BEYOND!!! We were very impressed by how she swiftly handled the situation with so much class and generosity to treat a client how everyone would wish to be received. Despite the server and chef being the first to talk to me and my girlfriend, only Michelle was the one who actually left us feeling taken care of instead of just hanging in the air.
Service otherwise was slightly inattentive. No checking in to ask how we are doing. No checking in to ask if we were ready to order mains or dessert (we had only ordered 4 appetizers so far). Water container sat empty for too long on the table. Girlfriend waited 15 minutes for one beer. After hosting in 600+ daily cover restaurants, lounges, and nightclubs in NYC -- I truly don't think there is a degree of "busy" which would justify service being so inattentive, but maybe the operations here are just different. We decided to skip the offer of comped dessert, although appreciated, to get dessert and more drinks and coffee at The Dandelion across the street instead.
Food came very fast and was delicious. Yummy no matter what type of "eater" you are. Thank you to Michelle for being great at the end of the night - we appreciated the comped re-made tamale and you seem like a wonderful genuine person who was truly the saving grace of the night and our experience at Bar Bombón in general. So Michelle should get a raise or a promotion and this review should be passed onto the owner.
I would come back, if only to support Michelle and enjoy the food which was very reasonably priced and portioned for a fun night with a girlfriend, all with the benefit of unique dishes which are difficult to find meatless. I hope this review doesn't sound too harsh at all or that I think of myself as a Gordon Ramsey LOL because I don't. Michelle was incredibly accommodating in remedying the mistake, being proactive, and overall above and beyond in the simple 15-30 seconds of her chatting with us, which I think speaks volumes to the type of person she is and how emotionally intelligent and good with people she naturally is. Very...
Read moreGosh I really don't like doing this, especially with restaurants that have a good intention... But this place is just a horribly operated restaurant.
After making reservations two weeks in advance for Valentine's Day, I got a call the day before to inform us of a last minute change - that the a-la-carte menu would be switched out for a $65/per person five-course meal with an option for a $40 drink pairing option. Before cancelling the reservation, I did call back to speak with a manager who was understanding of my concerns and did compromise to offer purchasing a single dinner shared between both myself and my girlfriend. Thankfully we went for this option because two times the amount would have been WAY too much food and WAY overpriced.
We got to the restaurant 15 minutes early to our reservation, but there was still a line to wait in. Although we specified indoor seating, the hostess gave the couple ahead of us preference to sit indoors, even though they acknowledged that their reservation was to dine outdoors. This caused us to wait even longer for a table to open up inside and for us to be seated - NOT COOL.
During the hour and a half meal, our waitress came to check in on us ONCE and our water glasses remained empty for most of the meal. All five "courses" came out at once, making us feel extremely rushed out the door. The food was nothing more than mediocre and preparing it at home would have cost a fraction of the $80 bill (I remind you that was the amount for ONE person).
It was evident that the staff was overwhelmed and was in over their heads for Valentine's Day. There was more focus on logistics and trying to get people seated, causing the staff to neglect their customers' dining experience. Listen, I typically either write a good review or just keep my mouth shut and assume it was a one-time mistake on the restaurant's behalf. But this time there are no excuses - the prices were jacked up and the service/quality of food were absolutely worthless. I'll never go back to Bar Bombón and, truthfully, if you have any sense of cooking at home, you're better off making the food yourself.
This restaurant needs to major reevaluation. I would have much rather eaten an $8 Domino's Pizza and donated the remaining $72 to the homeless man outside - he deserved it more than this unorganized...
Read moreIve been here twice. The first time was so amazing I was dying to come back. We came back for my birthday, actually! My birthday dinner, on the other hand, was horrible. It was so horrible I wasn't sure if I ever wanted to come back by the end of it. Our food didn't come out at the same time so my tacos were cold by the time I ate them, our drink orders were messed up, and one of the servers (don't remember if it was ours or not) dropped a tray near me, spilling ketchup all over my outfit and hair. They comped ONE of our appetizers and our dessert for the inconvenience of the ketchup. However, I honestly feel like the experience was so bad that that wasn't really enough (after all the check was still close to $200 by the end of it all and we were only 3 people). At my go-to restaurant in my hometown, those messed up beverages would have been at least discounted if not comped as well, and the dessert would have ALREADY been comped since it was my BIRTHDAY so we might have gotten all or at least two of our appetizers comped instead of the dessert and an appetizer (the Dulce de Leche cake WAS the best part of the meal, though). Not that I expect free things for poor experiences from restaurants at all, but I guess my point was more that the comp we DID receive didn't really feel like much of an apology at all in comparison to my experience, to be honest. Finally, the waitress we had was just generally pretty inattentive. We only received one pitcher of water for the table at the beginning of the experience (which we all finished pretty quickly and wanted more of) and it took her a while to bring us our check at the end of our meal. I'm still rating 3 stars because my first experience was SO good and SO memorable and the food probably would have all been AMAZING this time as well (except the nachos, vegan cheese just really isn't there yet in my opinion and we should have known that) IF I was even able to eat it while it was hot. I'm definitely going to give them the benefit of the doubt and try them a third time, but I hope to have a better experience in terms of service, especially if we come for an event like a...
