Read moreStopped by for some ice cream while visiting Philadelphia. There was a small line outside the door, but it moved quickly. There's a menu outside, so I used this time to decide what flavors I wanted. There's a wide range of ice cream desserts from ice cream (cups/cones), sundaes, floats, ice cream sandwiches, etc... After 10 minutes, was at the counter and ordered the medium cup with Peanut Butter ice cream and the Caramelized Banana ice cream topped with their whipped cream.
After ordering, you wait outside away from the door to prevent everyone crowding the door. Most waited across the street or further away from the exit door. They have a loud speaker which you'll hear your name called when ready. Within about 5 minutes, my order was ready. There were 2 large scoops under the large amount of whipped cream. The ice cream was delicious as it tasted homemade. It was very soft, creamy, and just melted in your mouth. Both flavors were very rich and not too sweet. There's no tables, so most just stood around or sat on the curb to eat their ice cream. I will definitely come back and probably try a sundae or a shake. I just ordered the scoops this time as I wanted to taste the true taste of the ice cream without any other...
Read moreI really enjoy the Franklin Fountain. Their ice cream is little overpriced but you get a lot for the deal and it is by far some of the best ice cream I've ever eaten.
The ice cream bar is a totally different story.
I'll give them the credit and say that I went in one of their first weeks open, and they perhaps had not worked out all the kinks. My girlfriend wanted milk chocolate she'll but they were having problems getting their chocolate to set. Fair, first weekend or whatever.
But put simply, it was not worth it. We both thought it was wasted money.
Half the toppings just fall off. There's no easy way to eat the thing. Sure, the ingredients are good, but it is damn near ten dollars for one of those bars. It felt like something I would make at a kid's birthday party if the parents had somewhat refined taste, but it still not gourmet. Nor is it particularly creative: the topping choices are very limited compared to the usual offerings at these kinda places (don't expect a froyo-level assortment).
For eight dollars I would much rather go to the Fountain. Sorry guys, I know Old City joints are pricey, but this is just too much of a ripoff for me to...
