If you use the regional rail or Amtrak system in Philadelphia, you are probably already familiar with Old Nelson. They are a bit of a staple in the area and they have a number of locations in the area, all of which are in close proximity to the train stations. Their selection of packaged goods is eclectic and vast, and ranges from the standard, to hard to find iteam such as candy bars from Japan or the UK that I have not seen anywhere else in Philly, to the strange...why would I need a 1lb squeeze pouch of coconut butter when I'm at the train station? That said, they are great and they have everything, digging through their selection for fun new items is a regular event for some of my work mates, and they are always getting in something new. Their prepared foods are also quite good, but here is why I knocked off one star. While they do a good job and the food is always tasty, I frequently order salads, in addition to a sandwich, or sometimes on their own. For whatever reason, when you add a salad to your order, it gets de-priotitized and pushed down to the bottom of the list. Many times I will be standing around for as much as 10+ minutes while people who walked in and ordered 5 minutes after I did are getting their sandwiches and leaving. I'm not sure why they do this, but it's quite annoying, so it you order a salad during the breakfast or lunch rush, be prepared to sit and wait while everyone else has their...
Read moreThe food is okay but this deli is too chaotic and unorganized. I was asked to basically let four people cut me in line despite the deli’s own sign saying the line started in the other direction and already waiting in line. When I asked why the line starts there since it blocks the exit and conflicts with the instructions in their own sign, the cashier basically said people don’t always follow it. This isn’t the first time this created unnecessary confusion and when you are on lunch break, there is no need to waste time because other people can’t follow directions and the business doesn’t care to enforce it. The other issue has been a few times I ordered a sandwich, they don’t tell me until I’m there to pick it up that they are out of the bread I picked and after I’ve paid. This has happened at least three times. I was regularly going to this place but the affordable prices aren’t worth the...
Read moreNice location, friendly service and quality ingredients. All the components of a successful deli are all there but I just don't think they try hard enough. Big selection of sandwiches but none of them are ever made correctly or all have some weird twist that you don't expect. As an example on the most recent visit had the turkey panini. Everything you need a turkey panini was there, but it was cold inside. Simply had not been pressed properly. If you get a cold sandwich they give you chips, but its taco chips. Why? Its just not right. They use weird bread. Prices are reasonable for the area. I just wish the workers would try a little harder to get things right and fine tune around the edges. Might be good idea for the owners to visit some other deli's like the Korean on JFK and see how he...
